This was an interesting album. Very original -- can't really compare Slo Pho to any other trip hop or dreampop artists. The vocals are sultry and clear with an amazing range, and the beats are quite good. The only problem is that there is such a disparity in the quality of various tracks. For example, some of the tracks (Porn, Sick, Water) are incredibly well done, and I can see Slo Pho spending months in the studio perfecting them -- but others, not so much.
"Porn" is track 1, and it is pretty good. "Water" is track 13, and is simply incredible -- the standout track on this disk. Track 11, "Sick", is the darkest -- and my personal favorite. Just these three tracks is worth the price of the CD -- amazing stuff. The rest of the tracks aren't bad, but are largely unremarkable -- after a couple of listens they tend to get skipped over a lot.
"Water" and "Sick" showed me that Slo Pho has a great talent, and I am looking forward to hearing more from these little-known artists.

Sweet Slips Of Nordic Grace...., December 10, 2005

Each slinky song on this Norwegian duo's debut disc is like a flitting snowflake: subtle, light-weight, chilly and totally unique. Great for late nites, autumn musings and the sunday morinings of the soul.
Jazzy? Certainly, especially on "Water." Ambient? Definately. Check out "I Wake Myself." Electronica? Indulgently, deliciously on "Dial." Cafeteria-Pop like Bjork? Yes, but better on "The Sea." Triphop? Samplicious, low-fi, and portisheady on "Inhale."
If you like Kosheen, Bjork, Portishead 's Beth Gibbon's solo CD, "Out of Season," Hooverphonic and fellow Belgians Airlock," then you will LOVE this surprise from Norway!

This album is great for those cold winter nights (or days), when you're with a certain someone and you feel like laying in bed all day and doing nothing. The title track "Hotel Sleep" is amazing. Turn down the blinds, mix yourself a bloody mary, and lay in bed for hours on end. Let the hypnotic rhythms and lovely tone changes in this album drift you off to another world.
People who like these artists will love Hotel Sleep: Lamb, Hooverphonic, Nightmare's on Wax.
