3.0 out of 5 stars Good Overall but a little bit dated, February 17, 2011
This review is from: W Hotels Presents: Rhythm and Muse II (Audio CD)
I love the W Hotels CDs because they help create that loungy vibe you get in the lobby, lounge and bar at a W Hotel. Best played with a system that has some good bass, these are great for relaxing, driving or romance. You tend to really lose yourself in the beats and soothing vocals. If you are the type of person who entertains a lot (or whom often finds himself next to a beautiful woman on a couch) these are some CDs you will want to add to your collection.

This CD stars off with 'Take This Life', which sounds like a Madonna vocal even though it isn't aligned with a soothing beat. W Hotel CDs usually start out with an uptempo number but this one starts off with a playful and sensual song like this one. 'Veni Redemptor Gentium' is a mystical song with an amazing Operatic vocalist. It is chilling, haunting and sexy. This is one of my favorite songs on the disc. It would be great for driving along a lonely road but also great for candle light and romance. It is clear to hear where the CD is going when the next song is 'Silence' by Delerium which is one of the best known 'enigma-esque' classics. While it is slightly played out, it works after the previous song and leads you into a romantic and sensual mood. Another played out tranquil classic comes with Moby's Porcelin. It again works with the vibe of the CD even though at this point I started to wonder exactly how old this CD was as these last two songs have a late 90s/00s shelf life. 'Demain Jazz' comes next (unfortunately) and in the snap of your fingers the CD goes from sexy and sensual into a loungy jazzy funk. I would probably like this song better if it came in a different place in the album. But I don't feel it transitions well from Moby. No batter can hit .1000 and the next song proves that. 'Back II Life' by Soul to Soul kind of makes you stop and scratch your head and makes you wonder if you wandred into a late 80s/early 90s movie about college. I would have left this one off.

'I Believe' comes next and restores the dreamy trance-like vibe that Moby left off with. It relaxes you and makes you forget that you wasted the last few minutes listening to a college anthem from 1989. Soft and soothing, this is a great song. 'Central Reservation' comes next, which is a little 'Lilith Fair' with a lounge beat but apparently is very popular with the ladies as several mentioned really liking this song. 'Worlds Keep Spinning' is a take it or leave it song ... I'd leave it but some might not mind it. To me, it sounds a little like something you'd expect to hear at a roller skating rink but it isn't the worst song I've heard on a W Hotels CD. 'Connected' comes next ... you've heard this one before ... and I would have left this off the CD because I feel it is not only played out but doesn't really belong on a vibe CD like this. I can't imagine hearing this in a W Lounge unless it was 'Back to the 90s' Night'. 'Weekend' comes next which has a funk sort of beat and another '90s College Mix' vibe. Skip. 'The Gift' comes next, which is something you could expect to hear in a W Hotel Lounge. Very light, airy and groovy. Nature sounds are mixed in and it has a dreamlike cloudy sound that makes you relax and soothes you. A nice way to finish off but the second half of the CD did not live up to the first.

Overall though, this isn't a bad mix and not one where the bad songs ruin the whole vibe. Still, I would probably cut about 1/4 of the songs off before putting them into my IPod. Obviously, this disc is a tad dated but still worth keeping around. Not as good as the Interlude CD though.
