Product Description

While buckaroos drove cattle from the Great Basin to Montana and Wyoming, Texas punchers were driving longhorns up the Goodnight Loving Trail. The two cultures came together in Wyoming and Montana territory and the Northern Range Cowboy was born. To make a hand here, you have to ride rough horses with plenty of buck in em and stick it out through long, cold winters. Houlihan takes you on the next leg of the Vaquero Trail to great ranches like the Padlock, the Arapahoe and the Hoodoo, and the famous Miles City Bucking Horse Sale.

Review

Some say it is the lush grass, some claim it is the harsh weather, but many a rank bronc and resilient cowboy to ride it has come from the Northern Range Country of Wyoming and Montana. During the cattle drives of the mid-1800s, Texas cowpunchers herding cattle to northern pastures and railheads met buckaroos driving cattle up from the Great Basin. As the cultures collided, a new breed of cowboy was born. Along the way, you will visit 10 outfits, and watch some of the best bucking horses around, at Burch Brothers and the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale. And brace against the elements feeding cattle in frigid temperatures from a horse drawn sleigh. This region is also home to a host of historic saddle shops and innovative gearmakers. Interviews with craftsmen and horsemen offer enlightenment on the Northern Range cowboy tack preferences and philosophies. Houlihan, the fourth DVD in the Vaquero Series produced by Susan Jensen and Paul Singer of J&S Productions in Santa Barbara, California, examines the evolution of the Northern Range cowboy, his horsemanship and stock-handling traditions and his tack. The DVD is your ticket to travel through some of the most scenic unpopulated and abundant ranchland in the United States. Impeccable sound and picture quality, spectacular scenery and wealth of cowboy culture information reserve this DVD a permanent place on the shelf, along with the other DVDs in the Vaquero Series. --Western Horseman Magazine
