5.0 out of 5 stars A truly remarkable album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Go further back than this one.
As an Australian fan of You Am I, I feel considerably aggrieved that Amazon have not stocked their first two albums, 'Sound As Ever' and 'Hi Fi Way'. These two releases probably represent the best work produced by any Australian band since the Birthday Party, outplaying The Who at their own game. 'Hourly Daily' on the other hand, represents the downturn in Tim Roger's...

David Roberts, the "official" critic above, calls this effort "thoroughly uncharismatic." I suspect Mr. Roberts did no more than scan and skip through his cd with great haste due to the number of releases he has to review, which is a shame. Those who give them the time will learn that You Am I routinely create unusually rich and sophisticated hard-pop songs in the early Who/Kinks vein, and I believe "Hourly, Daily" to be the best of their first four efforts (though all are excellent). Calling this band "regular guys playing a regular brand of bar-room rock" does Amazon customers a tremendous disservice. This album contains some of the sharpest narrative lyrics and most sublime orchestration one is likely to hear. I find it tasteful and addictive. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underground Suburbian Bible, October 7, 2000

To observe, then tell, and at the same time get the point across to a wide range of society is hard enough. To paint these little essays against a beautiful background of modern suburbian life is awe-inspiring. Timmy Rogers has always been a master of the catchy tune, but the way this album's melodies and wordplay are married, you have to believe he is one of the most underrated songwriters of our time. It's as if the Who of '66, got collabaration from the Beach Boys, and were given lyrics from a young, Jam-led Paul Weller. It was three years ago that I first heard it, and I still cry at the sheer beauty of its simplicity and profoundness.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one started it all for me, January 5, 2002

While working in Sydney in 1996, I heard a few You Am I songs (in passing) on the radio. When I went back in 1997, I decided to check out their most recent cd, Hourly Daily, just to see what all the fuss was about. It had recently won the latest ARIA (their Grammy's) Best Album award for the year. I immediately became a You Am I fan and have bought everything they had made before HD and have made since, including Tim Rogers' INCREDIBLE solo cd "What Rhymes With Cars and Girls". What kills me is that these guys have never "broken" into the USA, for which more fame and fortune they truly deserve. The American public misses out on them and gets force-fed Savage Garden.

Anyway, I recommend buying both the domestic and import version, because there are a few different songs on each one. Also, get their live cd "'Round Ten, Saturnday Night". It does well in capturing one of the best live, fun bands I have ever seen. I'll travel to either coast to see them play if the next time they come to the States, they only go to NYC, LA, or the like.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Money for Amazon, August 15, 2007

Picked this album up off Amazon after buying their Convicts album in HMV. This is so much better. Don't get me wrong Convicts is a great record but it was the first one of theirs I picked up. I now discover that they have all this back catalog for me to go through, I feel really lucky. Hourly,Daily was released 11 years ago. I've never heard it until today. Feels like it's been in my life for the past 11 years. Simply amazing. Looks like Amazon's gonna get more of my hard earned cash as I pick up the rest of these guys work. Trust me. It's that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another landmark album in Aussie rock ..., April 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hourly Daily (Audio CD)
You am I continue to deliver the freshest and most energetic sounds in "Hourly Daily" their 3rd album....reminiscent of the sixties Kinks, and other great pop bands Tim Rogers and the boys deliver beautifully catchy tunes with a hard guitar edge. Standout tracks ..."Mr. Milk" , "Soldiers" in fact there isn't a bad tune on it. Their fourth album , titled "You am I's #4 Record"..and ,like their 2nd album "Hi Fi Way", strangely not listed by Amazon...should be complusory listening for all rock fans....as should Tim Roger's recently released (in Australia) solo album "What Rhymes with Cars and Girls". Buy all the You am I albums ....and hear the best Aussie rock has to offer.

This album has been my favourite since I purchased it a couple of years ago. Musically, I think it has appeal to many listeners as well as having a very localised (Aussie) feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive Pop/Rock, March 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hourly Daily (Audio CD)
You Am I are one of Australia's finest and this record stands alongside Hi Fi Way (where's that in Amazon's 4 million titles?) as their best work. Hardly a weak track here. The band move easily between cranky guitar rock with sing-along choruses to the softest of ballads - done tastefully. Do yerself a favour and put it in the shopping basket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catchy from the get go, pass another Coopers Pale Ale., February 14, 1999

Having just returned from a 3 week holiday downunder, I was driven to bring back some You Am I. A quick sound bite from an episode of MTVs Road Rules/Australia made me seek out the music of this band. I made my way to a local record store in Sydney and held up 3 different You Am I cds and asked the clerks "which one do I want?" They all pointed to Hourly,Daily. They were not wrong. Check this out and you will find yourself turning your friends on to it as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Put the same old stuff away and pick up something fresh!, December 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hourly Daily (Audio CD)
You am I is a band made up of 3 ordinary Aussie blokes who know how to make addictive music. Hourly Daily has everything from accoustic ballads to driving guitars. The lyrics are fun with some typical Aussie sarcasm. I recommend you add this to your music collection - you will not regret it.
