5.0 out of 5 stars Alawar Games Winner February 29, 2012
By PCCnyc
Kate Reed is the author of a supernatural bestseller. But that was several years ago, and the inspiration well has run dry. So when she receives an invitation to a seance, she jumps at the chance to attend. However, she soon finds out that the seance is just a ruse to entice her to come to an island that turns out to be the latest landing spot for the House of 1000 Doors. The house contains ghosts, but it is no ordinary haunted house as it can travel through time and space. The other residents are a group of mediums who use their skills to help the unhappy ghosts resolve their issues and cross over to the other side. The group has been assembled by the mysterious Gabriel. He recognizes that Kate also has psychic abilities so that is why he has summoned her for an audition of sorts to see whether she might be right to join the other mediums.

O.K., so maybe except for the roving house you feel you've seen this plot before. Kate faces four challenges which are each self contained stories with unique environments accessed by portals in the house. For example, in one story Kate goes through a painting and finds herself in a winter scene where she must help the ghost of a sculptor. At times Kate must return through a portal and search the house for needed items and to converse with the other mediums. In the last chapter of the game Kate finds a film reel with a message from Gabriel, and we learn her ultimate fate.

While most of the plot points are wrapped up in a satisfactory manner, we never quite find out what is behind the giant ancestry tree attached to a wall in one of the rooms. Kate fills empty slots on the tree with portraits she finds in various locations. Since it's obvious they are planning a sequel to the game I'm assuming we will learn more then. Not knowing doesn't detract from the current game.

The storyline of this game is well written, and finding out what happens to Kate should keep anyone motivated to finish the game. Numerous cut scenes enhance the proceedings. The characters themselves are of Sims-like quality and sometimes their dialog is spoken in a stilted manner. But these are minor distractions.

The game play itself is very solid. The hidden object scenes are clearly drawn, and are the kind where you might have to search in a drawer or box to find a few of the objects, and also have a couple of objects interact to get the item named on the list. There seemed to be fewer mini games than HOS, and they tended to be short and not overly hard. I liked a mini-game where you tested your reflexes by splitting logs and one that has you laying out a model train track. House of 1000 Doors is at heart an adventure game with much of the action taking place in the game environment outside of HOS or mini-games. I liked the fact that you had to really remember what had gone on previously in the game because sometimes you come across a problem that had to be solved with an object collected much earlier in the game, and sometimes you finally got the tool to explore a scene that you came across much earlier in the game.

On top of all that, you have the opportunity to find 35 morphing objects, and it isn't easy!

Except for the familiar premise of House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets I don't think anyone will be disappointed if they purchase this game. I definitely am looking forward to a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun! March 8, 2012

I play a lot of these hidden object games with mini-puzzles and am always disappointed if they are too easy. At the same time, I play to relax and don't want the mini-puzzles to be so hard that I'm left feeling like a dolt for not knowing what it is I'm supposed to do - let alone solving it.

I set this one to expert mode and really enjoyed exploring each setting to be sure I'd found what there was to find without "over here!" clues jumping out at me. I would have liked it even more if there hadn't been a glittering lure to the hidden-object settings (expert mode doesn't stop that clue) but even so, once I got within it, I found it to be a good combination of relaxation and searching.

It got a little too easy toward the end, as many of these games do, but it was definitely worth the money and I'm sure I'll play it again sometime. I liked it enough to be interested in another installment!

The game downloaded, installed and played perfectly with Windows Vista.

5.0 out of 5 stars Game of 1000 Delights March 2, 2012

This game is definitely worth the price of admission! Good graphics, plenty of action, and morphing objects as an added bonus. I played it for an hour or two over each of three evenings so it's not a game you'll zip through. Is there a sequel in the offing? I highly recommend it.
