The most obvious "rule" -- that the scale of a successful window decoration should always be in harmony with the walls and windows of the room -- is unfortunately not always followed. Too often, a curtain panel is too short, or stock-sized louvered wooden shutters are too small. Curtains that are too narrow are a common problem, especially when trying to fit standard sizes available at retail to the nonstandard windows of many rooms. A big window deserves generous embellishments; undersize hardware and flimsy rods will automatically underplay its inherent drama and grandness.
Rooms with a View
Window coverings play an important role in controlling light. In rooms with large windows, they provide a comfort shield against the sun's glare and heat. Often the best choices for rooms that face into the sun are wooden venetian blinds, vertical blinds, or mini blinds with narrow slats of plastic or aluminum featuring cords, wands, or other mechanisms that allow the light to be finely calibrated.
A growing concern about the harmful effect of ultraviolet rays has given rise to a variety of solar screening materials, including a scrimlike plastic mesh that works well for large window walls in contemporary settings.
