Floors and Ceilings Floors and ceilings usually receive less attention than walls but they, too, can be source of visual delight. A painted floor can offer all the color or pattern of a rug. Even at its simplest, a coat of solid-color paint immediately banishes imperfections in an old or worn surface. A pretty stenciled border, on the other hand, might be used to draw attention to a beautiful wood floor, while a more complex trompe l'oeil design - based on the pattern of an actual carpet, perhaps - can become a real work of art underfoot.
Painting a ceiling also has a surprising impact in a room. A white ceiling over colored walls, for example, will appear higher than it actually is; a small room with the walls and ceiling the same color tends to fee snug.
