Review

"A feast of good old-fashioned horror. Don't pass this one up! -- Brian Keene, author of The Rising

"House Of Blood is a page-turning thrill-ride of terror!" -- Douglas Clegg, author of Priest Of Blood

"Smith has made an impressive first novel debut." -- Cemetery Dance Weekly

From the Back Cover

Later, the ones left alive would agree they never should have turned off that dark stretch of Tennessee interstate. They were tired and tense, two guys and three girls arguing over a vacation gone bad. But things were about to get worse for the five young friends. Much, much worse. In fact, most of them would never see the highway again.
The woods were dark and forbidding, filled with unseen dangers and inhuman sounds. The light in the distance promised sanctuary from the grasping terrors. Instead, the light lured the travelers to the very heart of evil, a house at the entrance of Hell, a house that held only torture, depravity and--for the lucky ones--death.
When the front door closes, the screaming begins!

1.0 out of 5 stars terribly written book..., December 29, 2006
This review is from: House of Blood (Mass Market Paperback)
I saw the hyped-reviews of this book, and thought it might be a fun read since I like scary stuff. Unfortunately, it is very poorly written. The author never describes this "world" adequately to his readers. Fantastic facts of this underworld are brought up only when needed for the plotline. For example, when one character needs to speak to one of the "gods," she steps into a portal, which gives her access to this god. Before then, we never heard anything about "portals" inside the house, and I don't think they were mentioned again. Poor, poor, writing. The publishing house employees must be the ones writing the rave reviews. Skip this one, or suffer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical haunted house, February 17, 2006
This review is from: House of Blood (Mass Market Paperback)
This book starts out giving the illusion the plot is going to be another haunted house story. It begins with the old "our car broke down and we walked for miles until we found a dilapidated house and it turned out to be a chamber of horrors" plot. Then swoosh!, it leaps out of nowhere, grabs you by the throat and yells, "SURPRISE, HAD YOU GOING THERE FOR A MINUTE, HUH"? It spins into a refreshingly different direction and takes you with it.

I really enjoyed this book. It is original and in the world of horror fiction, that is saying a lot. There are multiple levels to this tale and each one is bone-chilling. The complaints I have are few. The supporting cast, you know the ones I'm referring to...remember the 1 or 2 people at the beginning of the original Star Trek series that were in the opening scene for the sole purpose of getting killed immediately...they are killed way to quickly without developing into anyone you cared about. It would have been great had the author spent just a few pages building up their part in the story and a few pages less on the sex scenes that quickly grew tiring and stupid. That is why I have to give the book a 4 star rating instead of a 5.

Overall, this is a great book. Give it a try, it's fun, short and very easy to read. I think you'll enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remember Friday the 13th?, January 13, 2005
By
wiley18 "wiley18" (Tebbetts, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: House of Blood (Mass Market Paperback)
This book, although not a terrifying piece of horror fiction, reminded me a great deal of movies such as Friday the 13th, and any other storyline where there are a group of teenagers, or young people, traveling, who end up in the middle of nowhere, and are somehow not immediately phased by the fact that someone in their group goes missing, or is butchered by an unknown entity. The book starts out a bit slow, and the language is a bit choppy and uncertain at first, but picks up speed about mid way through the book. I had heard the author began writing the book years ago, and maybe that explains what appears to be difference in skill level from the first part to later parts. Good story, definately not similar to anything I've read in quite a while.
