This time, Syfy have comissioned Nu Image, production company behind Shark Attack 3 and Skeleton Man, to produce a haunted house movie.

It kinda works. But really it's accidental genius; besides their notably "so-bad-its-good" films; Nu Image movies generally consist of the basic building blocks of an archetypical film.

Now, between ineffective big-budget films like the 1999 The Haunting and Darkness, and ineffective low-budget films like Crazy Eights and Return to the House on Haunted Hill, most modern haunted house films are... well, ineffective.

There are some good ones although the "average" for such a film tends to be pretty weak.

The result? That the basic building blocks of a haunted house movie, set up correctly, are ultimately more effective than the majority of the "competition".

Essentially, House of Bones is a decent haunted house film. It has... well, the bare essentials for a haunted house film, but still proves a decent time killer.

Incredibly, despite often interfering with the scripts of movies they commission, Syfy have been restrained here; there's very little CGI. Additionally the body count is low; very few expendable characters introduced in hopes of "keeping things interesting"

And that's great, because haunted house related films really need establishing time. The film didn't leave me feeling unsettled, but it had me buying the concept that the house was haunted & the characters couldn't just leave.

I found it to be an enjoyable movie. Not groundbreaking or mindblowing but it thrilled me. I enjoy Corin Nemec a lot and wish he was featured more than he was. However, Quentin is a fun character and well acted. Charisma is equally as fun to watch. The spoof of 'reality tv shows that want to suck in more viewers by playing on the supernatural' is great! I jumped out of my seat a few times. I wish this had come out around Halloween but I'm sure it will make it onto SyFy's menu soon enough. Enjoy!

This reminds me so much of 90's slasher style (a la "Scream") but it's supposed to be a paranormal.... in fact it really crosses sub-genres going all over the place and ultimately falls flat.

If I could narrow it down I'd say this movie completely fails to draw the viewer in by: (A) introducing the paranormal trauma too soon after we meet characters that aren't terribly sympathetic or even interesting (B) making what appears to be a fairly large house on the exterior shots look like a set for your typical sitcom on the inside which is just way too darn small for any respectable haunted house (C) inundating the film with completely anticlimactic shock moments (like "omg look what happened to what's-his-name.... dang.... that sucks") and (D) giving us an ending that is like straight out of 70's made-for-television campy thriller.

Again, this isn't cheesy or low-budget but on a scary-scale of 1-10 it rates at about a 2 which is why i'm giving it 2 stars overall. My advice is rent, don't buy. :(

- Heather the psychic, post-vomit: "The presence in this house is malevolent. We should go."
- Simon the cameraman: "That's great. Let's get another take of that."

HOUSE OF BONES proclaims itself a Syfy Original Movie, and it's nice of them to warn the viewers. HOUSE OF BONES presents a tantalizing premise: What if ghost hunters from a reality show were to investigate a haunted house that is actually haunted? In New Orleans lies the Wicker House, an infamous mansion that has tallied an alarming body count: nine dozen or so fatalities over the past 200 years. The paranormal investigators of the struggling TV show, Sinister Sites, plan on featuring the Wicker House for a future episode. They're perturbed that there's new paint on the house. They think it makes it look less scary. We never do learn who painted the house. A worrisome notion gradually seeps in that, perhaps, the Wicker House did it itself. To look less scary. That is some disquieting sh--.

The plot conceit should've worked. It doesn't work. HOUSE OF BONES does entertain you on an inadvertent level. It is so bad, it's good. I will say that the cast isn't well served. So there's no blaming the actors. In fact, I thought Marcus Lyle Brown as the lead investigator does a lot to ground the narrative. The cast do the best they can with a screenplay that is severely wanting. Now, there are several decent scares and kills, but those are only as graphic as allowed in a made-for-television venture. I understand that the budget is chump change, but a bit more of (or any) on-location shooting in New Orleans would've further established an ominous atmosphere. Charisma Carpenter, playing a psychic, is wasted. As a slap in the face of every full-blooded male viewer, her wardrobe here consists of frumpy sweats and jeans.

OK, so the movie is not over the top great. But I like horror movies that give you a history about what is happening in the movie. This one was produced for TV so no gore here. I am a ScFi channel fan and I enjoyed this feature when it aired. Horror/ScFi fans will love this.
