2.0 out of 5 stars Starts Off Good...
a little bland and confusing at times

A good portion of the book is about Amish women having babies at Barb's house with Doctor Lehman present. Some good stuff. Started out interesting enough but over time, became superfluous.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Story of Compassion and Service, June 9, 2005
This review is from: House Calls and Hitching Posts (Hardcover)
I purchased this book while visiting Holmes County, Ohio, hoping to learn more from it about these hard-working, gentle, and deeply spiritual people known as the Amish. I was not disappointed! I learned a lot from this book about their lives and their beliefs and came away with a deep respect for their lifestyle and simple ways. Dr. Elton Lehman is truly an example of how to live a life devoted to serving God and others. Having grown up in Amish country, he followed God's call on his life to return there as their "country doctor". This book tells how he earned their trust and respect by going out of his way to honor their beliefs, and by always being there for them when needed. This book is well-written and a good inspirational, educational read!

This book is such a wonderful read that I can not say enough good things about it. It is very entertaining, I laughed and cried and couldn't put it down. Read about Dr. Lehman's fascinating career among the Amish and Mennonite population of Mt. Eaton Ohio; you won't be disapointed.

House Calls and Hitching Posts is a delightful book. Through the amazing stories of Dr. Lehman's practice among the Amish and Mennonites of Wayne County and surrounding area, you get an inside look at the close knit community that "Englishers" rarely see. Dr. Lehman finds that his medical school training has not prepared him for the practice he begins among the Amish as a country doctor. He must become flexible and learn the plain ways of people he will come to love. If you have an interest in the Amish, I highly recommend this book. It will make you laugh and cry. You won't want to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars House Calls & Hitching Posts : Stories from Dr. Elton Lehman, May 25, 2005

This is a delightful book! Anyone wanting a peek into the lives of the Amish and Mennonite worlds will not be disappointed. This is a "real" Mitford story. The author is very gifted in painting this world and bringing you into it. I was left wanting to read more!

The story is about a country doctor who truly serves the Amish community. This man is a rare individual who is selfless and caring. Another rarity is that his wife and family allow him to be this treasure. The story shows the joys of selfless living, although rarely easy but extremely satisfying.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Your life will be touched after you finish the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read !, March 8, 2005
This review is from: House Calls and Hitching Posts (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I was curious about Dr. Lehman's experiences. For I was once a member of an Old Order Amish sect. Before becoming an author, I rode horseback through farms to check on ill members. I really enjoyed his stories. I am recommending it when I am on tour this month.

While I'm not Amish, I lived near Dr. Lehman's practice and I was one of his many births and he was my doctor for the first 6 years of my life. Great book and an easy read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A look into the past, July 27, 2006
As an RN, I really enjoyed learning about how Dr. Lechman worked among the Amish, adapting his medical practice to fit the beliefs of the Amish and the sometimes limited supplies available to him. If you do not have a medical background you will still enjoy the book; the medical jargon is easy to understand and many times explained.

I was touched to read the stories of the Amish peoples' acceptance of death and illness in tragic circumstances, and their thankfulness when loved ones were healed. The book was very easy to read; every story is different and every story is interesting. The characters came alive as the doctor tells the stories of many years of caring for people, and raising his own family, in Ohio through more than 40 years of practice.
