This is the most magical book you will ever read. Set in Ireland in the 1700's it tells the story of the Royal Irish Artillery based in a small village and what life is like there. You will laugh 'til your sides ache, you will cry with sadness. It is the story of a village and it's people.Some you will love, some you will hate. You will feel you are part of this village. It is the best book ever, written by, in my opinion, the best Irish writer ever. He puts all the others in the shade. Read and enjoy. You will read it again and again and enjoy it every time.

Many people agree with Irene that this is Le Fanu's best work, and in deference to her I'll give it 5 stars, too. But just as many just don't see it. That's what makes it so fun to read and discuss with others. But I am afraid Irene has oversold it a bit so don't be disappointed if it isn't as magical to you as it was to her. I and many others prefer "Uncle Silas." Since it's free, download a copy and decide for yourself.
