Look Out Zombies! Get Ready for Total Annihilation!,

This game is a no-brainer. If you were ever a fan of the House of the Dead in the arcade, then you have to dish the $30 to get it. If you're as bad a shot as I was in the arcade, you'll make up the money in about 10 minutes worth of play. :)
If you've never played the game but are looking for a new title to use your snazzy Wii Zapper on, then this is also the game for you. It's super responsive and accurate, and gives you lots of satisfaction based on the sound effects and gore. For those expecting something new and fantastic for the Wii release, you may be disappointed. The graphics are the same as the tried and true versions, and the voice overs are still the very poorly-acted (but admittedly nostalgic) ones you love to hate. Parents, fear not. You can "censor" the level of gore if you're still OK with your child playing this type of game. (It's rated M for mature, i.e. 17+). You can make the blood be green instead of red, and also minimize the amount of gore in the options menu. Accessory-wise, you don't need the Wii Zapper or other comparable shooting peripheral. It works fine with the controllers as they come out of the box, but since the arcade version had guns, it's nice to have this extra. Here's what you get with the game: House of the Dead 2, with arcade and original modes, boss mode and training mode. You start with the basics, and as you get further and further into these modes, you unlock more and more things. House of the Dead 3 has arcade mode and extreme mode, with the same ability to unlock more and more as you go through the game. The only minus for this game (which still doesn't affect my rating of it) is the occasional lag you may experience during zombie-intense shooting moments (maybe once or twice during an entire start-to-finish game). It doesn't affect game play, but I'm sure some of you avid gamers out there would find it very annoying. Overall, getting 2 games in one for 30 bucks is a great deal, and I'm a very, very happy camper that my arcade fave has made a return for Wii.

A welcome, but slightly disappointing, return,

Sega's long running arcade light gun shooter series makes a welcome return with this compilation. The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return features nearly perfect ports of the original games, which in itself tells you everything you need to know right there, as both games are showing their age. The shooting calibration using the Wii remote is nearly perfect, while Extreme Mode is also included as a bonus of sorts. Sadly, that's the only real bonus that Sega included in this package, which really would have benefited from other extras or at least enhancements to the games themselves. Flaws aside though, The House of the Dead 2 & 3 are still great and fun shooters that new and old fans alike will get some enjoyment out of, but old fans of the series will be left wanting a little bit more bang for their buck with this package.

I'm a huge fan of the House of the Dead 2 arcade game from the 90s and have been waiting for a good console reprint to come out. This game plus the Wii perfect shot gun is as close as it comes to the original arcade game. I initially tried the zapper, but it didn't have the right feel. I now have an order out for another perfect shot gun, so I can play multi-player as it was intended.
Overall, the game is exactly like the old arcade. They didn't change or add anything from what I can tell, so if you looking for an upgrade to the old game, this isn't it. As such, you cant save your games and need to restart from the beginning when your credits run out. You do receive additional credits as you accumulate play time though. If your looking for a no-brainer FUN shooter, this is absolutely it.

In case you're not familiar...,

House of Dead is a lot of fun, but it's also rather dated and very brief. Each game is actually only about 30 minutes long if you can make it to the end. I like it a lot and I think it's worth the price, but if you're expecting a full game you'll be really disappointed. There's a whole lot more to Umbrella Chronicles, which also boasts better graphics and voice acting (except for the 8yo girl who voices a grown woman of course). I still easily prefer House of Dead over Umbrella Chronicles for one huge reason - your bullets have an effect on the zombies. It takes way too many shots to kill a zombie in UC, and you can barely even see that you hit them. When you shoot a zombie in the head in HoD, their head explodes and little chunks go spinning off into the air... MUCH BETTER!

Bought this with Wii perfect shot gun ($7.95 - a must have accessory) and have been playing it with my two teens for 2 hours/night for a few weeks. It's a great match for the Wii and a lot of fun to play together. And people with different skill levels have fun playing together (unlike, say, Mario games). This even lets their mom join in and have a blast.
It's also just like the arcade version - complete with crappy graphics (so bad in HOD 2 that it's funny) and fairly repetative gameplay, so I can see getting a bit tired of it in a few more weeks. But, that's ok and expected given the arcade game. Still definitely worth the money and we're all looking forward to HOD: Overkill. As a side note, it's also not a particularly good party game though since it's 2 player and the games last pretty long.

I really wanted to enjoy this game. I played this game many times in the arcade and jumped at the chance to purchase this game. The gameplay is very realistic as with most Wii games I've played. It's fun with one or two players...for the first 10 times.
After that, you get frustrated by the fact you have to restart your games from the beginning every time. And since I don't have the ability to play every day, I seem to be stuck in the first couple levels. Give us regular folks that just enjoy just a few hours a week of video games a chance to play an interesting game.

Our whole family enjoys this game! Our 6 year old loves zombies and we let him play this game. I know some people might not agree with that, but regardless, he loves this game. It is easy enough for him to play with one of us and keeps us on our toes. It still has the arcade style to it and isn't too difficult for children to play, but still hard enough to be challenging for adults. The graphics are still similar to the arcade game, they are not very "life" like in comparison to some new video games. I think that helps it keep the arcade style and makes it where children can play.

This is a very fun game. You are getting 2 games in 1 disc in this package. HODT 3 is also fun with much improve graphics, but I bought it for the classic arcade HODT 2. This is the one I played in the arcade; this is the one I played with my son many times. Cheesy language and acting are just part of its nostalgic appeal. Was not that scary and even somewhat funny at times. Resident Evil and even Doom II is much scarier in my opinion. You can also change the blood color to green to reduce the gore if you want.
You cannot go back where you left off, you really don't need to as the game is not that long. Every time you die you get more and more power that soon enough you get power-ups and items that will help you defeat the game. Some of the best items are infinite bullets and infinite credits. It is more fun if you play 2 players with a friend. Although you can play this with a gun in each hand if that is what you want. Not an ideal party game as you cannot play with more than 2 players. The game can be played with the Wiimote alone, but you will enjoy it better with an accessory that feels like more as a gun. The 2 most popular are the Perfect Shot by Nyko, and Wii Zapper by Nintendo. I prefer the Perfect Shot as it looks more like a real pistol while the Zapper is bulkier and longer. Too bad, I wonder why they replaced the concept and instead included much cursing and F-bombs on the 4th sequel, HODT: Overkill.

Most of my Wii-related purchases are made with the thought of being able to play them with my girlfriend, and this game is great.
I got hooked on House of the Dead a few summers ago in an arcade in Ocean City, MD, and when I saw this for $20, I got it along with a couple of Wii Perfect Shot Guns. My girlfriend and I love it. Some of the other reviews complain about graphics, but honestly, they're fine. My girlfriend and I don't mind the "no-continue" aspect of it, because we get better at it the more times we play. Great game for the Wii, definitely reccomend it for anybody. |
