In His lifetime, Satyajit Ray had been India's foremost movie director of international stature. However, films were not the only facets of his artistic personality. He was a creator of detective fiction, which has been a tremendous craze in Bengali literature -THE FELUDA ADVENTURES. Pradosh C Mitter ( Feluda) first made his appearance in 1965 in "Danger in Darjeeling" and ever since then has simply rocked the Bengali world . The books give a tremendous insight into Ray' s cinematic vision; the story plots and characterisations are well thought of and the stories have a tautly paced tempo. Even the settings for the stories make them ready made material for a movie script from the exotic Himalayas to the mundane Calcutta suburbs. Undoubtedly he is India's Answer to sherlock Holmes (though at times the influence is pretty palpable) and does a pretty good job at that... The six stories in this collection bring out the erudition of Ray's personality from folk music and western classical music to history and ofcourse films Characters in these stories emerge from simple middle class Bengali life -nothing larger than life about them-, which gives them an every enduring appeal A good way to start reading Feluda Stories is to begin with ADVENTURES OF FELUDA and then move to other story collection. Satyajit Ray's sleuth has the elements of Sherlock Holmes ,Piorot and Inspector Morse all rolled into a very endearing indianised version A MUST READ FOR ANYBODY INTERESTED IN ANGLO INDIAN LITERATURE

Only a few words: Ray's stories "à la Holmes" are real gems of entertainment, wit, art of storytelling, local colour, sense of the fantastic and unashamed, visceral, pleasure of the adventure. Satyajit Ray was not only an outstanding director, but also a great (i mean, *great*, writer). His books, legendary in India, deserve a worldwide audience. If you love, say, Conan Doyle, Kipling and Stevenson, and you don't know Ray, then I envy you! You may yet make a wonderful encounter!
