Editorial Reviews

Stone Sour, the Gold-certified, Grammy-nominated rock band, presents their fourth album, The House of Gold And Bones. The two disc CD set is a concept album that brings questions of mortality with someone at the crossroads of his life. Part One is available October 2012, followed by Part Two in 2013.

The band recorded the album at Sound Farm Studios just outside of their native Des Moines, Iowa with producer David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, Staind).

5.0 out of 5 stars Just out right amazing! October 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD
My god, I honestly can not accurately convey with words how amazing this album is. It's beautiful, gorgeous, sensitive, brutal, heavy, motivating, depressing, and happy -- all at once. Absolute Zero is motivating and heavy, Taciturn is sensitive and beautiful, Travelers pt. 1 is almost happy, but depressing as well. These are the three songs I'm just listening to over and over, the rest of the album is excellent too, but these three songs have me basically hypnotized and I just listen to them constantly.

One thing that really stands out is a sense of renewed energy. Audio Secrecy seemed like most of it was forced, House of Bone and Gold sounds like the debut album from a band that is newly formed and bursting with new, fresh ideas. I've never heard anything like it honestly.

Another thing I really notice is just how much better Corey is as time goes by. His lyrics have never been bad and I've always enjoyed them, but at this point he's just far superior to his former self in the lyrical department. He's actually poetic at times: "I think I'm happy, mostly happy, on a green autumn day. I'm walking lazy, barely moving, I settle out and fade away..." "In the middle, under a cold, black sky, The sun will only burn for you and I, In the moment.. Before I lose my mind, These hours don't mean anything, this time.."

His vocals genuinely get better every album too and this one is no exception. The dude is one of the most amazing artists of our time and will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest rock minds in history.

Really, this album is a treasure -- one of those rare pieces of art that cause you to feel butterflies and relate with the pain, anger, happiness, or any other emotion conveyed in the music. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend House of Bone and Gold pt. 1. If you like rock you will LOVE this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Stone Sour To Date. November 6, 2012
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
House Of Gold & Bones is in my opinion, their greatest album yet. It may not be as heavy but bands change over time and Stone Sour is progressing into a more mature direction. They grew out of the typical metal scene and are getting better with age. It contains more ballads like "Taciturn" and "The Travelers pt 1 & 2" heavier tracks such as "RU486" and "Absolute Zero". There's a lot of variety throughout that ranges from heavy metal, alternative rock and post-grunge. There's a good variety of hard rock and ballads, quality songwriting also and it's what today's hard rock and metal bands are lacking in today. Most of my favorite rock and metal bands are from either the '70s or '80s but this is one of the best rock albums in a long time. Audio Secrecy also had potential but it sounded like it was too rushed and they weren't ready for a change in direction, here they perfected their sound and it's more complete. It's easily their crowning achievement but that's open for debate too.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic album! November 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have been a fan since their self titled album. I've felt that there has been a slow downhill trend in overall quality since then. That said, the first half of their twin album concept breathes new life into stone sour. Musically and lyrically this is exactly what I have been waiting for. I won't go into any song breakdowns or favorites, but will say the album flows perfectly. This is exactly the album I knew they could put out and I cant wait til part 2!

4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome surprise February 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
A decade ago, Stone Sour took the world by storm with their self-entitled debut. Four years later, they returned with the even-more-excellent "Come What(ever) May." And ever since then, the band has been trying to out-do themselves by coming up with an equally-as-irresistible sequel to past hit singles such as 2002's "Bother" and 2006's "Through Glass." But so far, they have not been able to do so, What they HAVE been able to do, though, is come up with a really dynamic, epic, and expansive sonic range; one that varies from melodic hard rock to progressive balladry to nu/alternative metal to even full-on thrash. And, as 2012's "House Of Gold And Bones (Part One)," proves, Corey Taylor (who was initially of Slipknot fame) and the gang are also highly capable of writing a deep and moving concept album, in this case one detailing a man (Taylor) who is at a crossroads in life, and is now faced with many moral questions. And finally, "House" also showcases Stone Sour's increased instrumental abilities, as it boasts some surprisingly complex guitar work.

The album begins with "Gone Sovereign," a strong set opener that reminds of "Vol. 3"-era Slipknot, with its blistering thrash riffs, vocals that morph from melodic singing to vehement screams, thumping drums, stomping groove, and lengthy, winding melodic solo section; and ends with "Last Of The Real," which has a noteworthy bass intro that gives way to galloping, mosh-pit-ready guitar licks and fittingly violent lyrics (i.e. "I'll tear this place apart!"). For another piece of brutal, viscerally satisfying metal, also consider "RU486," the record's heaviest moment, with its crunchy, belligerent riffing, really memorable vocal patterns (including a powerful shout-along refrain), and grumbling bass bottom.

$16.77?
I'm wondering the same thing. For a single-CD album, that is very expensive for Amazon.
