I now have a happy house....,
By
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
Having just spent the past 6 months remodeling our old house, I was really happy that this book came into my life. I was just about to put everything into place when the book arrived. I read it from cover to cover -- twice -- and became truly inspired to make my house a happy place, a haven, and a home. Forget about the witch thing if that makes you wary...what Ariana does is give you down-to-earth advice on how to create a warm, inviting, soothing environment in which to live, laugh and love. I've used some of Ariana's methods and altered some to fit my own style...and my home is better for it. I especially loved the chapter on Feng Shui, as other books I've read were a bit complicated and detailed for my east Texas tastes. Enjoy!

House Magic,
By Cassandra Barnes "Cassandra" (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space is one of those indispensable little books that includes a wealth of wisdom. Author Ariana says that "there is such a diversity of information available from different sources and traditions that I thought an eclectic collection of ideas would help readers take control of their lives by getting their houses in order."Although the focus is on living space, getting a house in order also puts a life in good order. Ariana includes lots of suggestions, but emphasizes that what's important is developing awareness of who you are and learning to follow your own intuition in eliminating all forms of clutter from your life. She describes how to use techniques such as astrology, feng shui, plants, crystals, candles, and incense to create a harmonious environment full of positive energy. Each chapter ends with a section called "Bringing It All Together," which outlines the highlights of that chapter for quick reference. Ariana reminds people that the first step is to know what they want. That puts them on the road to achieving it. Then they can use whatever seems right for bringing in the positive energy needed for turning dreams into reality.

A simple, well-written little book that's not just for witches! Written with humor and intelligence, it offers practical advice, not just folklore. In fact, it deals far more with energy flow than with superstition. Excellent basic book for anyone who wants to go beyond the basic happy home books out there.

Too general to be of much use,

The author covers many different systems for making a house "work" physically and spiritually, but not in any real depth. The book's focus is extremely broad. Despite the reference in the title, the witchcraft angle is downplayed quite a bit, as there are numerous Christian references. I'm sure this gives the book wider sales appeal, but at the expense of providing a detailed treatment on any topic. It would make a cute housewarming gift, maybe, but buy books which specifically cover Feng Shui, herb lore, candle magick, etc if you want in-depth information. Cunningham's "The Magical Household" is a better bet if you're looking for general information on how to make your house a magickal home.

Invite a Close Friend over to Your House...,
By "berwynne" (Freeport, Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
More than a spellbook, or guide to Wicca and Witchcraft, this book is specifically designed to help everyone make their living areas into sacred spaces. Ariana puts forth her ideas and suggestions in a casual, friendly tone, and makes the reader feel as thought they are getting advice from a good friend. On the magical side, the book is a handy reference that explores the meanings of color, fragrance, and object placement, and also includes suggestions on how to use your astrological sign to guide your decorating scheme, as well as how to enhance your personal health and well being through the use of gems, crystals, and the art of Feng Shui. This is a fun, creative book for anyone wishing to create a more peaceful home environment.

Simple, beginners information...,
By A Customer
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
This book is good, although I'd like to caution those intermediates, like myself, that is is a beginner's journal, covering the basics of a number of subjects. I was tempted to give it 3 stars, although, not due to writing or info, but, I felt mislead that it was more advanced than it is. I found very little info in this book, that I didn't already know from the several classes I've taken, and the handful of books I've read on any number of those subjects mentioned in this small book. The info is concise, however, is more for those who know nothing at all about rudimentary space clearing, Feng Shui, astrology, crystals, or candles and colors. If you've taken even a few classes, or perused a few books, in any of the above subjects, then you've already got the info provided in this book, and should skip it for a better, expanded book on the particular subject you'd like to explore or study. This is definitely not a book for expounding on what you already know and to take you to the next level. It simply provides the first, basic step only. It is good, but that first level is all you get. Should you not know in which direction to begin, or not know much about most of the above subjects, then this book provides a simple "overview", and it would be for you.

How to change your environment and transform your life,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
Ariana's House Magic tells how to change your environment and transform your life. Plenty of books focus on particular paths for doing so - feng shui, et.al. - this brings them all together under one cover, providing the unified approach so necessary for a easy integration of spirituality and home design.

Absolutely amazing book for anyone learning or organizing the space around them. I highly recommend this book for everyone! There is many different things that make this an outstanding book. It takes feng shui, gemstones, astrology & witchcraft together which make you really understand how where things are placed in your home influence certain parts of your life. My friends have all borrowed it & have found it very intriguing!

Too generic,
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
I have to say this book was rather a disappointment to me in its generic approach to witchery in the home. Although not a bad book per se, I found it a bit confusing. It starts out basically as a book about decluttering, organizing and home decorating and then suddenly switches to astrology. The section on decluttering promulgates the 'less is more' philosophy which, unfortunately, is a theme that extends throughout the book. In other words, don't expect to find any detailed spells inside to try out this weekend. The magick in this book is more implicit than explicit; more feng shui for the anal pagan than house spells for the magically inclined. The author also seems to have a personal vendetta against toilets, claiming there's no good place in the home to have one.
I don't plan on visiting her anytime soon.

Interesting Approach to Your Home,
By
This review is from: House Magic: The Good Witch's Guide to Bringing Grace to Your Space (Hardcover)
The book promotes using candles, gemstones, astrology, mirrors, scents and other seemingly superstitious ideas to make your home special. When the reader samples these, many make sense and aren't that difficult to apply. There's a chapter on creating a sacred space in the home. Is that witchcraft? We would all love a little retreat where we can think in peace and quiet.
She recommends clearing clutter and creating a beautiful space with positive energy. |
