5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best children's books my kids have had
My oldest child is now almost 15 and I have had this book on hand for the last 12 years. I also have 2 other children. All 3 of my children have loved this book. I have read it over and over and over again over the last 12 years. The children especially liked creating their own house is a house situations. The kids would go on and on and on for ages. 1.0 out of 5 stars A word of caution
Many people praise this book for its depiction of a variety of houses. I want to share a concern about the Native American houses shown and hope parents and teachers will point it out to their children. The indiginous people of Alaska prefer to be called Inuit or Inupiat, not Eskimos. There is no such tribe as "Mohee;" research indicates "Mohee"...

I myself have thoroughly enjoyed the book time and time again.

I read this book to my daughter fifty times or more. It is a wonderful piece of poetry to recite; rhythmic and fun. The pictures are very detailed, with lots for a child to discover and ask questions about. Every page has an intricate drawing with many different recognizable details. I found it to be a good jumping off point for many varied discussions when my daughter was a tot. I send it to my friends who are having their first baby....

5.0 out of 5 stars House is a House for Me, April 18, 2002

I have only been a first grade teacher for two years now, and am just starting to build up my own children's literature collection. House is a House for Me is without a question one of my favorites. The children loved it so much when I read this book of rhyme, not a peep was made on the rug. When I was finished reading the book, the children wanted to create their own class version entitled House is a House for Me 2! If you are a teacher or a parent, this is a small investment, but one that you and your children will treasure for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really cute book!, April 13, 2011
I am not so much a fan of the illustrations in this book, but I love the way the book reads. It introduces all kinds of animal houses as well as slightly more abstract ideas like boxes being houses for crackers. The words rhyme and flow beautifully. Definitely great for toddler story time. It may be a bit on the long side for some, but it keeps my 2 year old entertained and he asks for it by name!

I loved reading this book to my children, and now reading it to grandchildren. The poetry is catchy and thoughtful, and the illustrations so detailed and interesting. A perfect book, to my way of thinking.

But I note that my grandchildren do not have the ear for rhyme, or the patience to think about some of the developing themes in the book, and they are not as engrossed in it as I remember children being 30 years ago. Just my experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this Book, October 2, 2010

This is a great book to get children thinking! As a teacher, I've used it for years. In my Pre-K class, I like to read it in small groups and follow-up with having the children think of other "houses for things."

The beautiful illustrations and poem encourage the kids to use their imagination and come up with new things that are homes. This was a favorite of my kids and I bought it for my grandchildren. Although they are a little young for the book, they will grow in to it and hopefully love it as much as their parents did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vocabulary and concept builder in silly rhyme, September 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son and I loved this book when he was 2 - 5. Its lilting rhythms and singsong verse hide the fact that this is an incredible vocabulary builder for little ones - giving them the correct terminology for a large number of shelters - animal and human. Great book!

I had this book as an oversized edition for a long time. It finally fell apart, and I was so glad to find it again. I love the artwork, and the clever text really makes one think. Love it, love it, love it!

I have loved every single book by Mary Ann Hoberman that I have ever read, and this is no exception. The book is great for reading aloud... the words flow very nicely. Betty Fraser's illustration are, also as usual, wonderfully whimsical and beautifully detailed.
