Biography

New Orleans is said to be a city where having a party has been elevated from a casual pastime to a way of life. Nobody understood this better than Professor Longhair, one of the pioneers of New Orleans rhythm & blues. His influence can be heard in Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John, among many others. Known for his unique mix of blues, jazz, calypso, ragtime, and zydeco, "Fess" (as he was… Read more in Amazon's Professor Longhair Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, August 25, 1999
By A Customer

I was in a music store when "Cherry Pie" came on--I have never been so blown away by music in the air and immediately bought the album. I have played it hundreds of times since. I have heard many other Longhair recordings and while they are all great too, this one has a special magic to it, a compelling vibe which makes it an all time classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comparison to his other works, August 31, 2005
This review is from: House Party New Orleans Style (Audio CD)
This is project was recorded well after his Mercury and Atlantic sessions. (said by many to be the definitive Fess)
Yet to be published are his works on Ron an obscur label from the 60s. Those 45s are hot if you can find them. This work is leading up to Crawfish Fiesta (his last work) This one is by far his most energetic work from this era. It makes Crawfish sound a little stiff in comparison. The band is loose and the drummer is insane. For a good Fess session it's all about who is on drums. This one tops the second disc on the Rhino collection which sounds like an afterthought. And this is way more energetic than the stiff british audience on the Queen Mary disc.
