About the Author

Known for his barbed wit, Oscar Wilde was one of the most successful late-Victorian playwrights and a great celebrity. The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray are among his best known works. He is perhaps most famous for his trial, in which he eloquently defended homosexual love and was sentenced to two years of hard labor. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Oscar Fingall O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford where, a disciple of Pater, he founded an aesthetic cult. In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd, and his two sons were born in 1885 and 1886.
His novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), and social comedies Lady Windermere's Fan (1892), A Woman of No Importance (1893), An Ideal Husband (1895), and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), established his reputation. In 1895, following his libel action against the Marquess of Queesberry, Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for homosexual conduct, as a result of which he wrote The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898), and his confessional letter De Profundis (1905). On his release from prison in 1897 he lived in obscurity in Europe, and died in Paris in 1900.

4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of four tales, October 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book comprises four tales and is a companion to The Happy Prince and Other Tales.

The stories in this book are:
* The Young King: A young shepherd is taken to the palace to be crowned king. He dreams of the sorrows befallen those who have provided his coronation finery.
* The Birthday of the Infanta: A hunchback dwarf is given to the Spanish princess for her 12th birthday.
* The Fisherman and his Soul: A young fisherman must lose his soul in order to be with the mermaid he loves.
* The Star-child: A baby is found in the woods and is brought up by a woodcutter. He grows up to be handsome but cruel.

As with the stories in The Happy Prince, these tales *can* be read to children but are intended for adults, with an underlying morality to each tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing, December 15, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a high quality book, but the illustrations are drab, dull and BORING. That's the major reason why I would not recommend this book. There is a cheaper edition of Wilde's fairy tales available at Amazon that has gorgeous illustrations and is a better value.
