Book Description

October 1987
Emma is drawn back into time to an old inn in a picture, where she finds a brutal man, wicked sisters, and a starved and bullied waif who needs her help.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 This is a murky story, drawn from Welsh legends about a wayfarer's inn in which the few who enter are rarely seen again. Emma lives with her grandparents and often helps out in her grandfather's curiosity shop. She is fascinated by a dark painting of a house which her grandfather tells her once really existed although no traces of it now remain. Her fascination with the painting grows until she is able to slip back through time as a ghost to that house, where she meets a young orphan, John, held captive by two witches and their murderous henchman, Evan Du. Emma is a passive and annoying heroine whose only talent seems to be spinning elaborate fantasies about the objects in her grandfather's shop. Thinking that no one will believe her excursions into the past, she tells her grandparents about them as if they were daydreams, to which they pay little attention. One of Emma's (and the author's) more irritating habits is constantly remarking on the vagaries of time. She may arrive in the past prior to her previous visit, or within minutes of when she last left despite the fact that months of real time have passed. There is plenty of atmospherethe past is dark, brooding, and mysteriousbut whatever tension there may be is dissipated through a lack of resolution. Susan M. Harding, Mesquite Public Library, Tex.
