5.0 out of 5 stars Great read-aloud book, August 29, 2001

Some books are good for independent/silent reading but they do not make good read-alouds. The House in the Snow is both. It is interesting to both boys and girls and is packed with exciting situations. My favorite extension is to have my 4th grade students draw the "invisible" fight scene. Because this book is out of print, I have been looking for used copies! I bought 3! Because it is out of print, most students have never heard the story which makes reading it to them more interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book, August 30, 2009
This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
I still have my original copy from when I was a kid. It's one of my favorites. Long before Harry Potter's invisibility cloak, I used to pretend I was invisible thanks to The House in the Snow. Really stood out as one of my childhood favorites. I kept a bunch of those good ones... I even still read them!

5.0 out of 5 stars House in the Snow, January 3, 2009
This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
I was a kid when I first read this book and it quickly became a favorite of mine. I rebought the book at a used book store recently and have saved it to give to my son when he is old enough to read it. Wonderful story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, December 13, 2008

This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
I read this book when I was younger and I loved it! I still have it and would probably enjoy reading it again. It has the same "Boxcar Children feel" because of the independence of the children. A good mystery and adventure story, and another good way to get older children and young adults to enjoy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars My first spine-tingler, April 4, 2000
This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
I adored this book when I was little, and it's still adult enough to keep my attention now. It tells the story of Benjamin, a young boy who runs away from his home in an inn in the middle of a bitter winter.

He finds himself at an ancient house, rumored to be haunted. But then a strange little boy named Mackie appears, and reveals that the inhabitants of the house are very much alive. A band of vicious, cutthroat robbers lives in the house, with a troop of orphaned servant boys. When the boys come of age, they are initiated into the band. A sinister addition is that the robbers have magic cloaks that enable them to become invisible.

Despite the fluffy-sounding plot, this is not a fluffy book. It includes small dollops of physical abuse, injury, and overall unhappiness, as well as a plot that shifts from action to suspense. But good wins out over evil in this gritty, pulse-pounding book. Kudos!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is really incredible..., June 22, 2000
This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
It is small, but "The House in the Snow" has a thrilling, suspenseful, involving story and is written very well. You can read this book over and over, it's a VERY easy read, but it's completely involving. It opens with Benjamin, an abused orphan, runs away and finds himself lost in the snow. The story unfolds quickly as he finds Mackie, a servant boy who escaped from a house full of cruel invisible robbers. See how it sounds silly? But it's really a great book, and I reccomend it to anybody, even if it's only an half hour read.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as when I was 8!, October 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The House in the Snow (Paperback)
This was one of the books from my third grade reading list twelve years ago, and one of the few children's books that has stayed on my shelf at home. This month I picked it up looking for something to distract me from my insomnia while home from school, and I thought it was just as great. Perfect for devotees of Harry Potter read-alongs with children, this book sounds just as wonderful read at bedtime as it does in a classroom....

This book is really good. I hate reading and I hate reading books with more than 12 words, so any book that can keep my interest is a definate 5 star (out of 5 stars) Doesn't take long to read and thats another good part. You should get it and read it!
