As a single woman whose major contact with men is in the dating scene, I found this book to have smart, funny and illuminating insights into the male mind and male behavior. Whatever the age of the male, the differences between the sexes provide for poignant, heartfelt and hilarious moments. While the author's incidents are located within the realm of one specific...

I had high hopes for this book, as a mother of two. The reviews made it seem like I'd get a hernia from laughing so hard...not so. The anecdotes are merely lukewarm stories that do not move the reader much, and the writing was overdone and lacked grace. Save yourself the money here and buy "Waiting for Birdie," which, while not having to do with raising boys, is hilarious...

As a single woman whose major contact with men is in the dating scene, I found this book to have smart, funny and illuminating insights into the male mind and male behavior. Whatever the age of the male, the differences between the sexes provide for poignant, heartfelt and hilarious moments. While the author's incidents are located within the realm of one specific family, I couldn't help smiling or laughing at how much it strikes a chord with my own, very different life. Whether you're a mom or not, women will appreciate her honest and humorous look at one woman's struggles with mankind!

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and honest, January 9, 2007

I'm not a mother, but I really enjoyed this book's funny, rueful take on the travails of raising a passel of boys-- including boy numero uno-- the author's husband. House of Testosterone may exagerate a bit for laughs, but it never distorts the difficulties and rewards of family, nor does it fall prey to the kind of saccharine platitudes of the so-called "family values" crew. Families are our support systems and give our lives meaning, but boy can they also be a big ol' pain in the butt. Anyone who pretends otherwise is a prude or simply kidding themselves. Fortunately from this reader's viewpoint, Sharon O'Donnell is neither.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Knows Her Territory, January 2, 2007
Though only one of my four kids is a boy, I could relate to (and laugh out loud at) these finely-observed tales of life among menfolk. (This author has three sons, plus a husband and I think a male dog, too.) With this book mothers of boys will have something to entertain them on the sidelines of endless sports practices, while also finding kinship in a world of stinky socks, burp contests, toilet seats left up, etc. In other hands it might be cliched material but ihere it reads like, well, all-too-real life among the (sweet) savages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud!, December 23, 2006
This is a fun book full of laughs and some poignant moments. Several short tales are held together well and well sequenced. Good for when you have just a few minutes. But, also holds attention well for long periods too. Do not read when you would be embarrassed to laugh out loud!!! A must read for anyone who has children of ANY age and for those thinking about children or marriage. I am recommending it to all my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have Boys? Read This!!, June 19, 2008

This review is from: House of Testosterone: One Mom's Survival in a Household of Males (Paperback)
Absolutely hilarious! I found myself laughing so hard, my husband had to come and check on me. Her expression of daily life in a house of boys shares the humor, exhaustion, isolation, and love that are part of every moms' existence. It's a fun, quick read that left me feeling like I am not the lone woman trapped in a world of poop humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for mom's of boys, June 18, 2008
This review is from: House of Testosterone: One Mom's Survival in a Household of Males (Paperback)
My hubby bought me this on vacation as a joke. From the very first page I laughed and laughed. My hubby and all 3 of my sons looked at me as if I was from another planet. I stayed up all night and read right through the whole book. It is great to know that I am not alone. Feeling left out and out of place in a home full of men. Like the author I am the mother of 3 boys (4) if you include my dear hubby. We also have a male dog and cat. This book was very entertaining and helped with the mom guilt of not understanding the men of my household.

5.0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that!!, June 17, 2008
This review is from: House of Testosterone: One Mom's Survival in a Household of Males (Paperback)
I stumbled upon House of Testosterone at the grocery store a couple of months ago, and couldn't pass it up! I am also the mom of three sons (no girls), and laughed my way through to the last page (where I cried). I have a photo of my oldest son at about age 4, dressed in his "Rainbow Man" outfit, very similar to the little guy on the book cover. My son had a red hand-me-down shirt with an appliqueed cloud and rainbow, and we just happened to have a pair of tube socks with red, blue and yellow stripes; and Rainbow Man was born. Every boy wants to be a superhero.

As soon as I finished the book (now that my boys are grown and out of the house, I can finish a book quickly), I gave it to my younger sister, who is the mom of four boys, no girls, knowing that she would also enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on Point, March 26, 2007

This book is humorous and heartfelt. As I was reading it, there were moments where I wanted to cry or just burst out laughing. This is a good book to read whether you are a mother or not. It is very informative, right on point about males all round, regardless of their age. I will use this book as my guide to raising my two sons. It is a must buy for yourself or as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift book, March 8, 2007
THis book was humorous, but also poignant at times. Having three boys myself, I could relate to many of the situations in the book. It is also a book you can read a little at a time, and read over again for a laugh. I was actually laughing out loud! This also makes a good gift book for moms with boys. I have bought them for many of my friends. Also, I enjoyed going to the author's website. Lilly G
