Not a "How To" Book...,
By Cottage Rooster (Nashville, Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The House That Faux Built (Hardcover)
I purchased this book along with another it was paired with "Your Home a Living Canvas" by Curtis Heuser. I was looking for help in learning some basic faux techniques, as I am nearing the completion of a major home remodeling project. Unfortunately, though full of great decorative painting pics, there was absolutely no step by step information on how to achieve the same results, as suggested by the sub-title "transform your home from shabby to showplace." This was very dissapointing as the book is suggested to be a how to. Luckily, the other book paired with it was exactly what I was looking for. "Your Home..." is filled with inspiring decorating and beautiful paint finishing ideas, perfectly suited for the average do it yourself homeowner like my husband and I. If you are looking for just inspiration, "The House that Faux Built" will fulfill. If you are seeking both inspiration and easy to follow instruction, then "Your Home..." definitely delivers.

This book is truly one of a kind/cutting edge and the best in faux-I heartily recommend it!
It has over 500 full color before, in progress and after photos-showing the transformation of an ordinary fixer upper into an incredible home. There are surprises in every room-(such as a "broken wine glass" painted on the steps or a woman in just a towel painted on the bathroom door.) Ideas to change a home without ripping things out--a cat stained wood parquet floor stained to resemble an inlay wood persian carpet or an ugly refrigerator made over to look like a built-in. Great ideas for any homeowner or real estate professional wanting ideas to flip or stage a house. I liked too that the techniques were green/eco-friendly. Over 100 top artists participated for charity and the book's proceeds build a habitat house in New Orleans

Knowledgeably written by Adrienne van Dooren and illustrated with the photography of David Galen and Omar Salinas, "The House That Faux Built: Transform Your Home Using Paints, Plasters & Creativity!" is an elegant and highly recommended addition to personal, professional, and community library Interior Design, Home Remodeling, and Home Decorating reference collections. This beautifully organized and presented compendium of ideas and concepts draws from more than one hundred top artists who contributed their inspirations and examples in support of the New Orleans Habitat House and Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue programs. More than just another coffee table interior designer art books, "The House That Faux Built" is fairly brimming with practical, do-it-yourself, illustrated suggestions for making small changes in any home decor that will have dramatic results for any household renovation project. Drawing upon more than three hundred full-color before-and-after photographs of the New Orleans house project (and its sister project -- a Chicago church), "The House That Faux Built" showcases hundreds of 'tips, tricks and techniques' employed by renowned artists and professional interior designers. Especially commended to non-specialist general readers with an interest in transforming their own small rooms into something bigger and better on a limited budget, "The House That Faux Built" is thoroughly 'user friendly' and confidently recommended.

Philanthropy at its finest!,

Philanthropy, is the act of donating money, goods, time, or effort to support a charitable cause (wikipedia). Of all the ways Adrienne VanDooren could spend her time she chooses to give. Bringing together faux artists whose inspired creations define the "art" of giving. This project not only touched my heart, it opened my mind to the possibilites of bringing a house to life with faux. Thank you...

too much of a good thing,

I'm new to faux painting and looking for simple but effective ideas. There are good ideas here, done for a good cause, and this is a fun book to page through. But - not for a beginner and the house looked like it was wearing rather too much makeup. The page layouts are even more cluttered than the decor and I couldn't really get a handle on what was going on. The pictures of "before" and "in progress" are small and not helpful to a newbie. If you're thinking about painting clouds on a ceiling, forget it. These folks are WAY beyond anything that basic and take for granted that you are, too. Luckily the library had a copy I could preview.

If you like looking & not doing, this is the book for you. I purchased this book under the impression that it was a "how to" book on faux techniques. Not at all.The featured house is gorgeous as you would expect since it was all done by very talented people. But for those of us lacking in that aspect the inspiration isn't even close to attainable.

Who would have thought that faux could look so terrific, especially now when home sellers need to differentiate their homes. Buy this book, implement it's suggestions and sell your home FAST!

great if selling a home,

This book is a must see for anyone updating their home on a budget, those who want to remodel without ripping everything out and throwing it in a landfill, and for anyone updating an older home.
The ideas are incredible and the resource guide tells how to get the products, talk to the artists, buy how-to CDs, take classes, etc. There are over 400 color photos with a lot of great close-ups of the details. The artists applied the latest in paints, plasters and sealers right over tile, cement, brick, laminate, etc and achieved incredibly high end results. The basement redo was the most inspiring. They painted one 61/2 ft ceiling black and it just disappeared. The room which had no windows became a favorite room in the house. Agreed it's not a "How to"-- sponge and paint clouds book that the one reviewer was looking for-there are tons of those books out there. And yes the before and in-progress photos are smaller than the after photos-but their purpose was just to show the incredible before and after transformations, not to provide instruction. This book is for folks who want more updated looks and advanced ideas. It has been a best seller on Amazon for 3 years and 100% of the profits go to charity. In fact enough books sold to build a habitat house for hurricane victims on Nov 09 and the artists went down and did specialty paint and plaster finishes on it. It has also raised thousands of dollars for animal rescue. It is important to note that the house sold in 3 days with multiple offers for 125k more than they paid for it --in a down DC market. Even taking one or two ideas and applying them to your home |
