Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-- A rebus format is used to illustrate this beloved cumulative rhyme. Each phrase of the rhyme is allotted a full-page illustration, with smaller illustrations on the facing page indicating the rebus symbols. Eventually, the entire verse can be read from the pictures. The most widely accepted version of the verse, ending with a farmer sowing his corn, is used. While the Provensens did an especially attractive version in their Mother Goose Book (Random, 1976), this is the only picture book edition available, and it is an effective one. The illustrations themselves, full page and facing symbols, are done in a sturdily stylized form, with each figure posed against a pastel, Arcadian backdrop. Human figures are doll-like, but animals swarm and chase each other across the pages when they aren't marching serenely around the borders. Falconer has done an imaginative job of expanding the rebus form into a picture book to create a competent and functional, if not particularly distinguished, addition to nursery rhyme collections. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library
