Book Description

Classic Fiction S. February 18, 2003
The horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, with its dungeon of death, and the overhanging gloom on the House of Usher demonstrate unforgettably the unique imagination of Edgar Allan Poe. Unerringly, he touches upon some of our greatest nightmares - premature burial, ghostly transformation and words from beyond the grave. Written in the 1840s, they have retained their power to shock and frighten even now.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

This collection contains some of the nineteenth-century author's most popular and well-known stories. Master of the "grotesque and arabesque," Poe wrote many stories that reflected his worst personal nightmare--premature burial. Those who thought only Basil Rathbone could narrate Poe are in for a surprise and a treat. The no-nonsense William Roberts narrates a production mercifully free of frills. No unnecessary music or sound effects interfere with the brilliance of the writing or the purity of the performance. In addition to "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Pit and the Pendulum," Roberts reads such favorites as "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Black Cat," "The Cask of Amontillado," and "The Masque of the Red Death" in a manner both terrifying and satisfying. 5.0 out of 5 stars I loved listening to this one, February 10, 2008
This review is from: Fall of the House of Usher / Pit & The Pendulum (Classic Fiction S.) (Audio CD)
I am a great fan of Poe and really enjoyed listening to this. If you love Poe you will like this. Only complaint, wish there were about three or four more cd's to this package.
