Editorial Reviews

How much change is a band willing to endure in pursuit of a dream? In the case of Coliseum, as much as it takes. In the three years since their second album, No Salvation (their first and only for Relapse Records),the Louisville power trio have changed labels, producers, engineers, and replaced the frenetic breakneck speed of former drummer Chris Maggio with the emphatic rhythmic stomp of Carter Wilson all in the service of producing the album they always dreamed of. That album is House With A Curse, their third full-length and first for Temporary Residence Ltd.

Punk rock used to come in all different shapes and sizes. Hell, Nirvana used to be considered a punk band. Then something happened around the mid-90's, and punk was a quantifiable commodity, like property or stocks. All of the sudden, this was punk rock and that wasn't. NOFX, punk rock. Refused, hardcore. Anti-Flag, punk rock. Strife, hardcore. What ever happened to the days of everyone embracing a new sound and an aggressive edge as punk? Coliseum are a band that straddle the line of what punk rock can be and what aggressive music could be, and make all sides happy. For the purists the band infuses a driving rhythm and power chord fury in every song. For those who grew up and demanded more substance, the band artfully blends post hardcore and metal references with the straight driving, head down approach, to create punk that's creative, imaginative, and infinitely more listenable. For example, tempo doesn't end up dictating what is or isn't punk on House With a Curse. More Fugazi than Minor Threat, the band utilizes many different cadences and guitar sounds to create punk as art, the way it used to be, instead of a militaristic following of genre standards. The result is an album that bares repeat listenings and stands the test of time. If you don't know what I mean or are unsure if you agree, then check out the band's Parasites E.P. first as a nice little appetizer, then buy this as your full course. I can't imagine why I'm the only one reviewing this band! Anyone who bitches about the state of punk today and doesn't listen to this or Torche or Burning love, is a stupid hypocrite! Please check this out and tell me if you agree. I know there are many others like me, who've been waiting years for something like this to appear. Now that it's here, I have to show my appreciation. I love Coliseum, and I'll hold other bands to the standard these guys have set!
