The drum fell apart after one use. A kind and talented friend helped me by discovering and fixing the problem. See his notes below:
I believe that there is a design/manufacturing flaw in what I'll call a "Drum Tension Clamp" I've attached a photo of the part and a sketch of what I think should be the correct configuration of the clamp. I would also add that the current configuration of the clamp allows for loosening of the acorn nut that places the tension of the clamp system and allows the acorn nut come off which then allows the whole clamp to come apart. Thank you, Marcia Troy Note: I will also try to forward a copy of the picture to you.

I gave this drum to my grandson who is 33 months old. He loves watching marching bands and pretends to play and march with several of the instruments that he sees in the bands. The drum of course was one of the favorites. This drum looks very realistic and sounds great. He loved the small sticks to strike the drum with, that care in the box. I am thinking of getting a second drum because his mom likes to keep the one I got at their house and my grandson often asks me 'where is my drum?' when he is with me. My only question is how is one supposed to use the straps that came with the drum? I couldn't figure out how to attach them properly such that the strap wouldn't just be hanging off our toddler's neck...If anyone figured it out please post a picture! We all love this drum though.

We bought this drum for my 4 year old son who enjoyed playing with it from the very beginning. He was a little young, though, and the top white part where you drum ripped because he played with it too hard. I would not recommend this product for kids under 7 or 8, but, then again, anyone over 7 might think the surface of the drum is too small. Also, the blue part comes up so high that it's difficult to get good drumming in (as you can see from the picture). I would recommend going with a drum with a bit rounder of a surface, or one that doesn't have as high of walls.

The "House of Marbles" wooden drum is actually a fine little musical instrument. The drum gives a good side-drum sound, especially when worn suspended with the included neck strap. I'm a composer, and I used this drum for a promenade for toy instruments I wrote and recorded, and I couldn't be happier with the drum sound. I played the instrument softly (p) through loudly (f) and it responded well throughout. I'm sure one could break the drumhead if one smacked it overly hard repeatedly, but it showed no signs of distress with my repeated forte hits. I strongly recommend this sturdy and whimsical instrument.
