Solution for the single guy,

This is my first Amazon review, but I had to give a shout-out on this clever and well-made item. I'm a single guy in a high-rise condo and I do my wash only when I run out of clothes. These pop-up hampers are the perfect solution. They fully collapse to an inch in height when not in use and expand to hold quite a lot of towels and underwear. The spring loading is just right, so that it maintains it's expanded height, yet it's very easy to re-compress when not in use. The cotton canvas is good quality, as are the zipper and handles. I bought 2 to try them out, which at $26 total makes them eligible for free shipping. Right now I'm putting in an order for a few more.

My daughter hauls her laundry home from college each weekend for me to wash. Why am I still doing her laundry? That is a whole 'nother issue we won't go into here... This basket is great. Sturdy, good capacity, easily folds flat for storage, zip cover to keep out the rain going to and from the car. Could only love it more if it came with a maid...

these are great! they hold a lot more than my old hampers, and seem very sturdy. the do collapse with weight (ie a mis-aimed shirt or a cat attempting to walk on the rim), but no problems. A great deal. They are also a bit wider than advertised if I remember correctly, at 17.5 inches across and almost 22 inches tall, but I managed to stuff them into my alotted space.

I bought this to store some "winter clothes" in. It really holds a lot. I thought that the top was a complete zipper closure but it isn't. It zips but its split on top so it doesn't seal out spiders <eww>. But I am still happy with the purchase.

After a good start, these developed a problem: the sharp end of the metal wire that provides the "pop up" cut through the liner again and again. After originally liking them, we would now not buy again and are replacing.

So I kind of can't believe I'm leaving a review for a laundry hamper. Whatever, this thing is awesome. I bought one several months ago and on the first day I had it my dog ripped off the top canvas cover and one of the straps. And yet it still managed to handle all of my laundry at about 3 week intervals. I never counted the actual garments in there, but like I said it can hold three weeks' worth of clothes, and the most I ever stuffed in there was 22 pounds worth. And it handled this with ONE STRAP. The strap did end up snapping at some point but I just knotted them together and it was good to go. Ghetto I know.
Unfortunately it met its demise when I left a muddy towel at the bottom for a bit too long. Some moldy looking stuff formed on the canvas bottom but didn't seem to affect my clothes at all. That's my bad though. Don't leave criminally dirty things to sit for a month, and you won't have that problem. Prior to this the hamper was always nice and clean. K so you know the basics of this. It has the volume and strength to handle a single dude's laundry needs for three full weeks. Some people have mentioned that if you toss in a piece of clothing and miss it will collapse...that completely depends on the article of clothing and how you throw it. T-shirts, underwear, and socks will just hang off the side, maybe making it lean a little bit. Jeans tossed in a high arc will in fact make it collapse. That is easily remedied by walking three steps and nudging the garment inside, and then the hamper returns to its proud stature with a resounding WHOOOSH sound* I can't comment on the compactness because I never use it. I just have the hamper set up in a corner of my room and dump my clothes into it. But when you compress it down and secure it with the very sturdy button mechanism, it's about the size of a pizza tin. So anywhere in your house you could store a pizza tin you could store this thing. So yeah when I had to eventually toss this, I immediately went on Amazon and ordered another one to replace it. Got it in today and it's in the corner doing its duty. Highly recommended. Mesh-style bags are flimsy and tear too easily in my experience, and plastic hampers are just unwieldy. Give this one a go, and your grumbling-laundry-day self will thank you for it. * note - no actual WHOOOSH sound

worked fine until metal poked through at the bottom...,

it folds quick and it's fun for the kids to use and play in. though after 1.5 yr of use/abuse, the metal spring/support came through the bottom of the basket (the stitching couldn't hold it in any more). otherwise, zipper works great and handles are handy. nice size.

Two daughters and a wife can get through an astounding amount of laundry, hence the need for many, large, reliable hampers.
Having tried many different cheap brands of the mesh variety (the handles of which always broke in short order) these sturdy canvas ones are the clear winners. They look good, the handles never break (after three years of constant use), and they hold a tremendous amount of clothes. This last point is also a minor flaw: when fully loaded they are almost too heavy for my wife to carry, or so she claims---is this just her cunning scheme to get me to do all the laundry??? As noted by a less positive reviewer, it has indeed happened (to 2 out of 7 hampers) that with extended use the metal spring has worn through the canvas, the sharp end protruding dangerously. However, a few minutes with needle and thread have re-enveloped this spring within the canvas, and the repair has now lasted more than a year. Yes, this should not have happened in the first place, but these hampers are nevertheless so far superior to others that I cannot bring myself to lower my evaluation to 4 stars. But if anyone from the Whitney company scans these Amazon reviews, please fix this problem!

Do Not Buy- Metal Breaks Through Bottom,

I love the concept and overall design of this pop-up basket. However, like a number of reviewers, I found that the metal rings quickly break through the material at the bottom of the basket. I have owned three baskets and my use of them has been gentle (I never overload them). Nevertheless, this problem has occurred on two of the baskets and I have had to toss them in the garbage. Faulty product!!
