a short and lacking treatment,
By Eric Maroney (Trumansburg, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Households And Holiness: The Religious Culture Of Israelite Women (Facets) (Paperback)
Carol Myers' treatment of ancient Israelite domestic, mainly female religion in Households and Holiness suffers from too much compression of its subject matter. Myers meant this to be a short treatment, but it is entirely too short to do justice to the wealth of ideas present. At best, this work can be the jumping off point for further research into introductory material on ancient Israelite domestic religion.

This review is from: Households And Holiness: The Religious Culture Of Israelite Women (Facets) (Paperback)
Meyers maintains that many of women's ancient religious practices took place in the home not the temples and have therefore been overlooked by Biblical scholars. In order to get an accurate picture of the religious lives of ancient Hebrew women one must take into account all aspects of archeology, ethnography, and anthropology as well as Biblical texts and put them into context.
