Vacancy: housekeeper needed for eligible millionaire!

Sexy Win Garrison wants a new housekeeper to make his life easy, not someone who tries to get a ring on his finger!

When curvy Carlene Daniels arrives on his doorstep, Win isn't fooled by her oversized jumper and hastily pulled-up hair. She's a knockout! So why is she trying to look like a frump? It makes him want to get her out of those clothes--and into his bed! Carlene doesn't seem to want to play...but what this millionaire wants, he gets!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rancher needed to be a bit more humble, June 30, 2008
This review is from: Housekeeper To The Millionaire (Harlequin Presents Extra (Unnumbered)) (Mass Market Paperback)
Here's the premise: virginal attractive former school teacher is down on her luck, totally hot rancher needs a housekeeper. Schoolteacher applies for and gets job but is warned by rancher that he is not the marrying kind in the interview. Add a few ranch hands, some characters from the past and you have the essence of this novel.

Rancher Win Garrison is arrogant and really hard to like. He spent almost the whole novel trying to persuade housekeeper Carlene into bed with no commitment. I especially disliked the way he could not define what kind of relationship he wanted with Carlene, not a one night stand but not marriage either. He kept saying there was something in the middle but I never knew where he was going with this proposition and neither did he.

Carlene is likeable and sassy to boot. She constantly has to put Win in his place and not just about their romantic relationship but also about her duties as a housekeeper. Win promises his sister he will look after her kids as she has her minor breakdown, (his sister just has to get away because she needs to be appreciated). Instead of watching his sister's children he thrusts that duty upon Carlene, even when she refuses to babysit he talks right over her.

Carlene's commitment to marriage is understandable and even laudable. Win's attitude is also understandable; his first wife left him. However, he makes the mistake way too often of thinking that Carlene is just like his ex-wife. His disregard for Carlene's feelings got old fast.

The ending is nice and I like the transformation of Win but it was a little too late for me.

This was okay; the story could have been a really great one if Win had been nicer and more understanding. I really wasn't super happy when they got together. I think Carlene needed someone who was clearly in love with her, including her brain and heart. Not just the other stuff. I wasn't convinced by the ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't hate it...., January 7, 2009
This review is from: Housekeeper To The Millionaire (Harlequin Presents Extra (Unnumbered)) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really like this author and I really wanted to love this book. I gave it every excuse in the world, but it still didn't make the storyline mesh for me. It wasn't even that I didn't like the characters. I did. I just didn't like the manner in which they came together....not that she was his housekeeper or anything, but the heroine's issues seemed compounded by the hero, not resolved by him. The truth of the matter was that his desire for her "attributes" were the same as every other red blooded male around, and while things obviously worked out in the end, I just didn't "get" the process. And don't get me wrong, I'm not a stickler for being politically correct or anything, and in the end it was "love" that kept them together, but I guess I had to be told that, and not showed that in this book. And that's a total bummer for me, because I like to see it revealed a page at a time.......not "All's well that end's well". So, 3 stars for the characters and the ending, but a -2 because they didn't get a cohesive storyline.
