"The Housekeeper" is a truly great film based on the novel by the inimitable Ruth Rendell. This is the story of an abused illiterate, mostly unskilled and uneducated woman, who goes to work as a housekeeper for a typical 1980s style wealthy family.

The clever script makes you sympathize with the housekeeper, as she befriends a loony nut and goes off the deep end.

The ending is one of the most shockingly brutal and upsetting I have ever seen.

Rita Tushingham is perfect in this role and should be lauded for a great portrayal.

The film is truly complex and definitely enthralling. Do not miss!

I tracked this down after seeing Chabrol's "La Ceremonie," a later film version of Ruth Rendell's "A Judgment in Stone".

"The Housekeeper" takes more liberties with the novel - moves the setting to North America, updates it to the 80s, and radically changes the ending (for the worse). The biggest change is to make the housekeeper a fragile, nervous, sympathetic character, a victim of her upbringing and bullying employers. It's very different from the book, but I enjoyed comparing them, and the movie is a fun ride in its own right. The 80s decor and costumes have acquired a fun, trashy "period" look.

I watched this movie several times and I dont get tired watching it cause It is a great movie well done is sad that this movie is not on DVD yet maybe it wont be. But maybe it will be available on Blu Ray lol... I hope great movie recomended it to everyone to see it specially on Christmas time.
