EXCELLENT cookbook!!!,
By
This review is from: Good Housekeeping Great American Classics Cookbook (Hardcover)
This book includes all the hard to find recipes Americans love and grew up on. Some of the regional and country wide recipes included are: Salisbury Steak, Fried Green Tomatoes, Muffuletta, Chicken-Fried Steak with Milk Gravy, Creole Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, Meat Loaf Surprise, Mom's Pot Roast, Yankee Popovers, and so many more. Brings back memories of your childhood. Each recipe has a story to tell and there is a lot of other information related to recipes. It's fun reading and even better eating. This is a must in every American kitchen and so reader friendly - good for the learning cook to an experienced one.

Great classics, indeed!,

I never write reviews, but this cookbook has been such a delight, I had to write something!
Looking to make the Christmas gingerbread cookies and frosting? It's here. An authentic jambalaya? It's here. Chili? Here. Chicken soup? Here. Every single recipe I've tried from this book has been above average to excellent. Just made the chicken enchiladas last night and they were better than what I've frequently ordered from my favorite Mexican restaurants. Like another reviewer said, this cookbook doesn't have every single recipe, just the truly great American classics. Recipes that we all grew up on, or wish we had! The history that accompanies most recipes is really interesting, and it displays how truly diverse this country is, and how there actually is "American" food. I actually picked this up at the thrift store for $7, so I really lucked out. If you're looking for a cookbook where you'll get a TON of mileage out of the recipes, and where almost every recipe will please, look no further!

Great Cook Book,

A great old fashioned recipe cook book. Remember the morning fresh bisquits or muffins your mother made when you were little, or Black and White cookies, you'll find the recipes in this book. Plus the book gives you a little bit of history on the recipes or the different foods. Just a very good cook book all around! I am totally enjoying it.

I can't help but talk about my favorite cookbook. It was given to us as a wedding gift and it didn't take me long to discover how much better it was then the ten or so other cookbooks we received!
I have done tons of recipes from it and compared them with recipes in other books. I have yet to find something that this book doesn't have the superior recipe in both technique, convenience of ingredients, and end result. It doesn't cut you short on description, often giving you tips you don't normally see (more tips on your toll house choc chip cookies, for example). The pictures are often especially tempting, and teaching as well (what will it look like?). Plus some nice good old American history is added for an interesting read. Another odd thing I've noticed is they have the perfect selection, but not an overwhelming one. I think of something random I want to make and it's almost always in this cookbook, even when it's not in the other giants! Yet it doesn't seem that this cookbook is overfull. This is truly one of the best cookbooks out there, and every person who remotely enjoys cooking should have it.

A classic for any home cook!,

I gave this cook book as a gift to two Khazakstan college students, who are interested in learning to cook the traditional American meals I prepare at home. This book covers them all from meatloaf, mac and cheese to Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. The instructions are easy to read and the color photos are very nice. I recommend this book for any new bride or anyone who wants all the classic American home recipes in one collection.

I had checked this book out from the library and after thumbing through it, I knew I HAD to have it. I love the overall history of American cooking and the many recipes (old and new) that are familiar to us all. The pictures are great and the recipes are easy to read. I have so many pages flagged for the recipes I want to try ... can't wait to get started!
