5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook
I'm buying another one because I've used my old one to death.
I received it as a gift in 1988 and have used it more than any other cookbook I have (and I have a lot!) The great thing is you can try a new recipe for company and be certain it will turn out great!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unappetizing freaky "classics" like Fish Mousse and Hardboiled Eggs with Pimentos in Gelatin?
It seems like a lot of european classics we'd never try--like Herring Salad or Creamed Onions, Sauteed Cucumber Rings...Descriptions like "Shredded cabbage with celery and pimentos in lemony vinegar gelatin mixture". Call us narrow minded, but we're not interested in that kind of food. By the time you get to the more common classics found in America, you're pretty...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cook Book Ever!!, May 28, 2002
This review is from: The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook: America's Bestselling Step-by-Step Cookbook, with More Than 1,400 Recipes (Hardcover)
When I first got married at 20 years old, I was completely clueless in the kitchen. This book was a gift from my grandma, and it saved my life! Or at least turned me into a good cook...

Every single recipe in the book has a thumbnail photo, indexed in the front according to type.. eggs, poultry, meat, breads, etc. Being able to see what the heck the finished recipe is supposed to look like took the scare out of trying cook.

Now many many years later, I'm still using recipes from those food-stained pages, and still getting raves from dinner guests and co-workers!! And now I'm going to order it for a kitchen-impared friend of mine.

This book has become a family treasure. I have had the book for years and could not find one that competes with it. All the recipes I made turned out just like the picture and tasted delicious, too.

All the recipes are pictured, but the pictures are separated from the recipes. All the pictures come in the beginning of the book in beautiful presentation, and then you can look up the recipe in a following page. The recipes are provided with clear instructions and step-by-step illustration. The measurements and cooking times are accurate. There is also a chapter on very useful information including nutrition guide, equivalent amounts, storage guide, eating outdoors, menu planning and entertaining, and a glossary of food and cooking terms. All provided with clear illustration and beautiful photography.

I bought this book when I was a beginner. Now, I am an experience cook, but I still amuse my family and friends with dishes from this amazing book. The Chicken Croquette is a top request. The Cannelloni, the Tetrazzini, the Pizza, the Dinner Rolls, the Chocolate-Cinnamon Torte and more, all turned out just yummy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta get this one!, September 6, 2004
This review is from: The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook: America's Bestselling Step-by-Step Cookbook, with More Than 1,400 Recipes (Hardcover)
If you are just learning as a new wife or as a teenager, this is the book for you. The illustrations help you get over the fear of not knowing the cooking "terminologies". Great pictures, great illustrations, easy to follow instructions. Not only does it help you learn the basics but you get to try out great recipies that look difficult but aren't.
This cookbook makes a great wedding gift or house-warming gift or even a gift for a sister or friend that wants to know your secrets. I have bought 3 of these for myself and have given each one away to help out someone wanting to learn. This book is a great way to introduce cooking to your teenagers so that you can teach them to take care of themselves instead of relying on fast foods.

5.0 out of 5 stars this just gets better, and Better, and BETTER!, June 19, 2007
This review is from: The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook: America's Bestselling Step-by-Step Cookbook, with More Than 1,400 Recipes (Hardcover)
At nearly 60 years old, and single all that time, I guess one could say "I never would have gotten this far if I couldn't cook!"

Well, that I CAN DO! I love to cook. Over the years I collected perhaps 125 cookbooks!?!? Guess what? I did not USE them! Over the years, I have kept paring down with each "move" (occasionally 'slipping' and picking up a new one here and there). I am now down to about 6 of my most favorite ones, and this one, "Good Housekeeping's Illustrated Cookbook" is the one that I reach for the most frequently. I have worn out two copies of it over the years, and I fully intend to always have a copy of it around until that "final" day!

This book just "begs" you to cook, to experiment, etc. Every recipe is aided by illustrations and clear instructions "as you go" to help you with everything you'd ever want to cook up in your kitchen at home. I have used dozens and dozens of cookbooks, and none of them have ever "aided" me as much as this wonderful kitchen helper.

Thanks, Good Housekeeping, you're the Best! ~operabruin

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, December 7, 2003

I have had an older version of this for 10 years and I love it. I have only made a handful of recipes from it but I use it to look up how to cook things, what to look for when buying a certain item, and for little questions like - do you use the white or green parts of the leeks etc. andhow long to cook eggplant or something I'm not familiar with. It is a great how to reference even for a seasoned cook such as myself.
