Book Description

October 26, 2010
An authoritative volume on the most innovative and environmentally sensitive new residential design. This carefully curated presentation of new and recent houses represents the vanguard of architects creating innovative structures that maintain a sensitive relationship to their natural contexts. Ron Broadhurst has selected projects on five continents demonstrating the inexhaustible potential of the modern house to enter into a dialogue with nature, either as an extraordinary object within the landscape or as an essay in environmental sustainability, or both. Featured here is work by such design luminaries as Kengo Kuma in China, Sean Godsell in Australia, and Allied Works Architecture in the United States. With exceptional color photography, the book presents houses created with sustainability and carbon footprint in mind, as well as houses constructed on spectacular sites. Some houses incorporate the cutting edge of environmentally sensitive design; some radically rethink the use of "traditional" materials such as wood and stone. A comprehensive collection, Houses: Modern Natural/Natural Modern demonstrates uniquely of-the-moment architecture and interiors and offers a vision of how we will think of the relationship between houses and the natural landscape in the decades to come.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...this stirring collection assembles beautifully sited modern and contemporary structures chosen with a bracingly hard-edge sensibility... Photography and printing are exemplary." ~Interior Design

"[T]imely…In Houses: Modern Natural, Natural Modern (Rizzoli, $60), author Ron Broadhurst presents beautiful structures well meshed within landscapes that range from areas around balmy, humid Mumbai to crisp Alpine heights in Switzerland. Plan, section and elevation drawings as well as photographs amplify the lucid text and make the coffee-table book a useful tool with which to design an eco-friendly - albeit expensive - home." ~San Francisco Chronicle

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Natural May 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A fine collection of 21st century houses from Asia, Europe, South America and the USA which employ various strategies to achieve an intimate and respectful relationship with nature. The use of traditional house forms with a twist; rustic materials; juxtaposition of the rustic and the machine made; softer takes on the modernist pavilion, as well as other innovative approaches are showcased.

The presentation does full justice to the architecture. Each of the 29 houses is covered in its own 6 to 12 page chapter. Along with informative text, plans and variously elevations, sections, axonometric or exploded views illustrate each house. The spectacular color photos are generously sized: most often covering the entire page, occasionally spanning two full pages and, on pages containing multiple images, never sized at less than 5 inches square.

Plenty of inspiration here for the nature loving professional and layman alike. My highest recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for ideas December 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful book for ideas since it covers a wide range of design options which are both minimalist and eco-friendly, using a range of materials suitable to specific locations around the world from the tropics to the Arctic region. I am starting to plan a rain forest house located on my sub-tropical estate in northern New Zealand and through living with these ideas and those in other similar books, find that the design ethic I am wishing to embrace along with all eco-friendly options to create an iconic home, truly start to grow and coalesce into ideas which can be developed in consultation with my architect.
