5.0 out of 5 stars Boston Deserves More Recognition, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Houses and Other Stories (Paperback)
This collection of short stories is related in many aspects to themes explored in Boston's novel STAINED GLASS RAIN. Set in Berekeley, California in the late 1960's, these stories deal with young people active in the psychedelic movement. The showpiece is the story "Houses" about a young woman who is trying to find a place to live after her lover is murdered by the police.

All of these characters are essentially attemmpting to make homes for themselves, since they are in many ways lost. The central character of "Houses" is rendered by Boston in a vivid, poetic language that explores her mind as it is reflected on others. The final sentence of the story reads, "She asks herself why the world is in so many pieces and none of them fit together."

The remaining three stories are under the collective title "Three Berkeley Sketches" and narrate similar situations. In this book, Boston reveals a strong talent and intelligence, and he deserves larger recognition. This book is highly recommended.
