Book Description

September 2001
Philip Johnson's Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut, is one of the great works of architecture in America. Ironically, the fame of the Glass House has obscured Johnson's many other notable residential projects, which are surveyed in this volume. The book is organized around a dozen or so key houses, with special attention paid to the Glass House and to its impact on other residential designs, by Johnson and others. David Mohney covers the full range of Johnson's domestic architecture, with emphasis on his exploration of several recurring elements, including the inventive use of courtyards, the distinctions between private and public space, and the close attention he has always paid to how his buildings are sited within the landscape. In addition to analyzing these key works, the author has also discovered a number of little-known but fascinating Johnson house designs, many of which were either never built or altered so much over the years that they can be understood only through drawings and plans presented here. The text is accompanied by photographs by Steven Brooke, which capture how Johnson used light, space and landscape.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Philip Johnson has had a very long and influential career. While his own small "pavilion" the Glass House (1949) is still his best-known domestic design, this survey analyzes a modest output of houses over six decades. Like most architects, Johnson started off designing houses, the majority of which are austere Modernist works from the 1950s. Later domestic designs, including various buildings for Johnson's own property, are eclectic or expressionistic. Architect authors Jenkins, a former Johnson associate, and Mohney (Seaside: Making a Town in America) clearly show how Johnson's houses have evolved in style while maintaining certain design principles. An afterword by Neil Levine focuses on the significance of the Glass House. Photography by Steven Brooke enhances this book. Recommended for large academic libraries. David R. Conn, Surrey P.L., B.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, June 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Houses of Philip Johnson (Hardcover)
Nice book about a famous architect ! Pictures are great and the book is also pleasant to read ... In fact I saw it in a "pousada" in Portugal, and I enjoyed it so much that I ordered at Amazon when I came back from holiday. It is perhaps not "THE" ultimate book on architecture, but lovers of very modern and human architecture can find in this book a compensation for the fact not to be a millionnaire and not be able to afford such expensive and beautiful houses ...

This review is from: The Houses of Philip Johnson (Hardcover)
On the other hand, Philip Johnson was an active fascist sympathizer and active propagandist for the Nazi government, who had tried to implement fascism in USA for at least 8 years between 1932 and 1940. Details of this past are described in "WE CANNOT NOT KNOW HISTORY:" PHILIP JOHNSON'S POLITICS AND CYNICAL SURVIVAL by KAZYS VARNELIS in Journal of Architectural Education, November 1994 published also on the Internet, and also discussed at [...]
