5.0 out of 5 stars low fi brilliance, May 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Houston (Audio CD)
Let's get one thing straight once and for all- Tom and Christina Carter are not revolutionaries out to push the boundaries of music- they are musical luddites. The departure of guitarist Jason Bill only heightens this fact. The Charalambides are making folk music that always looks back, never foreword, through unique eyes. They are reproductionists with a very unique way of communicating what they have heard and what comes out is unique, personal and self-indulgent (and as Dave Dove once said, "Why should it be bad to indulge yourself?"). Say what you will, but the Carters breathe what you hear on this CD. Their music is a madman who, fully engulfed in his vision, forsakes the outside world for his own. If you care to join them in their madness you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars touched music, June 21, 1999

'houston' is a collection of 3 a.m. folk breezings with lots of crickets and unrestrained id; a good thing. i don't think charalambides look back or forward, they just feel their way around with their eyes closed, and their four-track recording. at least it sounds that way; i could be totally wrong... re: the amazon review, this doesn't really remind me of john fahey or sandy bull; it's not technically dexterous like those two. maybe the closest comparison would be to jandek and his mysterious lady-friend, in a more folk-mode (like 'nancy sings'). whatever, this is great.
