3.0 out of 5 stars budget dining
There are many other books about dining in Houston that are far more helpful and easier to reference. I would not rate this book as a winner.

Fortunately, you'll be able to banish your hunger affordably at any of the more than 260 restaurants profiled. This guide is indispensable for anyone looking for new, interesting, and inexpensive places to eat, anywhere in and around Houston.

I found that the profiles of the restaurants I know were right on target, so I'm looking forward to trying many others which are new to me. The extensive indexes make it easy to find exactly the cuisine you're in the mood for, or the nearest affordable eats. (Get an extra copy for your car--you never know when hunger will strike while you're in an unfamiliar part of town!)

If you live in Houston, you like to eat out. With this book, you can eat someplace different every night. You'll never be bored with the same old food!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!, February 26, 2004
this book is a great source for all the restaurants in Houston. Every food cuisine and area of the city is covered. Who would have known that every food type is here.

Mike has done a great job covering the big name restaurants and the small "hole in the walls". If you are in the mood for Korean, Vietnamese sandwiches, hamburgers or central Mexican, Mike has tried it all and rated the best and cheapest.

This review is from: Houston Dining on the Cheap - A Guide to the Best Inexpensive Restaurants in Houston - Third Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Houston is a big messy city that is dazzling in its culinary and dining options. What I like about this book is that the author keeps his eye on his niche -- cheap eats and only cheap eats. What that means is hundreds of fabulous ethnic restaurants, mom-and-pop diners and the quirkiest dives. If you ever wondered what that interesting little hole-in-the-wall is like, this book will tell you. It's very useful, very detailed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Favorites and New Surprises, September 7, 2002
By A Customer
Who knew that the Chinese food restaurant around the corner (which we had never bothered to try!) was a hidden gem? Mike Riccetti did! Besides some of the Houston standards, there are many pleasant surprise choices in this book. Reviews are accurate representations and include info on atmosphere, drinks, and "what to order." Riccetti advises on places with breakfast specials and lunch bargains as well. Some of Houston's best restaurants offer good deals at lunch - he'll tell you which ones. Restaurants reviewed heavily favor Vietnemese, Mexican, etc, but will give you the courage to try some of those strip-mall joints you've wondered about (you'll be pleased!). Most restaurants are inside the Beltway/near the Loop but there are a few on the outskirts as well. Indexed by cuisine type, meal, location, etc. Very easy to find what you want. Call ahead, however - some of the information is already outdated due to the rapidly changing nature of the restaurant industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and accurate, May 30, 2007

I lived in Houston for many years, and I am impressed by how well this author knows the Houston restaurant scene. He truly did not leave out any of the tasty cheap restaurants in the city. He even mentions some of the really good but more expensive ones in a special section and guides readers to hard-to-find cuisines like Guatemalan. This is a fantastic book for both locals and visitors.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPOILERS!!! Read Below, November 14, 2005
Odin be praised for I love this book! Whenever I'm in town (I'm a Londoner), I don't hesitate to use this book to choose my family's next dining adventure.

The details and descriptions of the food and establishments you cannot find in any other Houston publication.

If I ever meet Mike, I will give him one love filled sucker punch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, December 14, 2004
This book is exactly what it claims to be. Well written, and thorough. Mike seems to know of every cheap eatery in the city, and gives a comprehensive review of each. A salivating read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the Diet Books--Eat Something!, February 3, 2004
Houston's a big city with a big appetite. You could eat in a different restaurant every meal of every day, and not get to every place in town. So how do you decide where to eat? Fortunately, Mike Riccetti has come to the rescue, identifying the best places to have a great meal without breaking the bank.

In the mood for Tex-Mex? Chinese? Middle Eastern? Ethiopian? Whatever your desire, in Houston Dining on the Cheap you'll learn where to satisfy it. The 320 restaurants profiled are listed in alphabetical order, and indexes in the back make it easy to find the type of ethnic food you want, places to try in your neighborhood, all you can eat buffets, a great breakfast or late-night meal, drive throughs, deliveries, and places with outdoor dining (a must on those beautiful spring and fall days).

Each profile includes lots of great information about the menu (with suggestions of what to order), as well as atmosphere and decor, and lots more. I've already identified several places I can't wait to try. Get your copy of Houston Dining on the Cheap and start eating your way across town.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for exploring new restaurants in Houston, November 2, 2003
If you are like me, you have the opportunity or need to get some of your meals out. I love the book Houston, Dining on the Cheap. Mike Riccetti picks out some of the less expensive restaurants that taste wonderful. I have found his reviews on restaurants that I am familiar with to be right on target. The book is more heavily weighted for the "loopies" and the southwest side of town, but does have selections from all areas.

What makes this book very worthwhile are accurate descriptions of the restaurants, items that each place specializes in, and their price range. I also loved the section of more expensive and better known restaurants to go to during lunch hours. Each restaurant is profiled with type of food, price range, speciality items, decor, and much more.

If you are looking for a great jumpstart to your dining adventures and you do not want to spend a great deal, this book is the way to go. Affordable dining experiences can easily be found from this book.

We keep this book in our car. It is organized by area of town, and neighborhoods so suggestions on where to eat are easy to find. We have tried several places already and were well-pleased with the food, decor, etc., which match the book's description. Houston is a wealth of culturally diverse restaurants and many of them are listed in this book. Don't be fooled by the word "cheap" as the food is really good! And this book will be a great add to the phone book you also keep in your car!!
