4.0 out of 5 stars An Original Jazz Piece..., November 24, 2006

Patrick Ergas (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: How About Uke (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album was the 1st of Lyle Ritz i bought, and i was very pleasantly surprised. In fact any Jazz Lover listening to this Jazz Ukelele would find this CD a real treat for the ears. Tasteful music, very fresh and free, elegantly performed, the spontaneous touch... yet not a flaw; in the hands of Masters at work together there; perfect accompaniments with the flute and drums, from what i can recall at the moment while writing this simple review. The harmonies and sounds in this CD will make you travel somewhere exotic, intriguing and exciting, yet all straightforward, that is for sure. Lyle Ritz is an innovator, by simply using an instrument such as the Ukelele and placing it out of its habitual 'Hawaiian' context, using it daringly, magnificently and very skilfully for Jazz Music. I highly recommend this CD, it is original and different, and if you're into Jazz anyway, it certainly cannot disappoint you!!!
I yet have to find out what else there is available out there from Lyle Ritz, and i'm starting my search as of NOW, hehe... Just found out that his latest CD was released in June 2006. As far as i am concerned this is a sure Buy, so sure thing it is ordered today!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Jazz, July 23, 2009
This review is from: How About Uke (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is great jazz. Simple in instrumentation (drums, bass, flute, ukulele); and yet very rich and style and sound. It is smooth jazz with the phenominal stylings and skill of Lyle Ritz! He was and is a pioneer in jazz uke.

If you like good smooth jazz it is well worth the money. Ritz provides a stunning performance for a first album.

5.0 out of 5 stars UKULELE AT THE RITZ!, August 31, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How About Uke (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is a re-issue of a recording that was released in the late 1950's. Ukulele master, Lyle Ritz, wielding a tenor uke, is backed by a combo of flute, bass and drums. The whole album has a classic jazz feel as Lyle and the boys do Ellington (DON'T GET AROUND MUCH ANYMORE, I'M BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT)Rodgers and Hart (HAVE YOU MET MISS JONES?) and some Ritz originals (RITZ CRACKER and SWEET JOAN). The highlight of the album is Ritz's rendition of Harry Warren-Al Dubin's LULU'S BACK IN TOWN (a title that has become a Ritz signature piece). MOONLIGHT IN VERMONT, YOU BELONG TO MY HEART and TANGERINE round out this tremendous selection of standards. Lyle Ritz was a pioneer in demonstrating that not only could you play jazz on the ukulele but you could play it with style! Ritz's smooth, fluid delivery utilizes the full, mellow sound of the uke and never misses a beat!
