Book Description

January 19, 2006
Whether in the wild or in captivity, our furry, scaly, and feathered friends exhibit an incredible determination to mate. Find out which animals engage in dance competitions, cannibalism, and intercourse that lasts for six months. Discover why lady weevils have a really hard time of it. And why the female Mormon cricket isn't offended when her partner insists on weighing her first. Marvel at the transgender clownfish, and gaze with envy at the humble barnacle and its remarkable sexual-organ-to-body-length ratio. In the world of animal sex there are apparently few traits or behaviors nature has deemed too bizarre to evolve.

How Animals Have Sex is hilariously informative, filled with breathtaking facts and astonishing color photographs. It will, above all, show you why you should never, ever try to explain sex by making reference to “the birds and the bees” - unless you want your kids to grow up thinking that it's normal to get aroused by balloons or to have your genitals explode half way through getting busy. You’ll never look at Mother Nature the same way again.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Some eye-popping photos combine with Defoe's amusing text to higlight some of Mother Nature's crueller jokes. With facts that will keep you in dinner party conversation for many months, it's ...a laugh-out-loud read, which proves your sex life could always be worse!' FQ MAGAZINE (December 2005) 'Gideon Defoe's satirical picture book mixes laughs with plenty of did-you-know facts about lesbian lizards and detachable penises.' WHAT'S ON IN LONDON (8.12.05) 'It's a small book, and the style is quite jokey, but every one of the anecdotes contained therein is capable of bringing dinner party conversation to a complete standstill.' -- Luis Villazon BBC FOCUS MAGAZINE (January 2006) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars How Animals Have Sex, January 1, 2008
This review is from: How Animals Have Sex: A Guide to the Reproductive Habits of Creatures Great and Small (Paperback)
This is a small paperback book with black and white photos of many animals "having" sex. Some photos are very detailed and may offend certain readers. The layout of a photo and info on one page spread- makes for a great Bathroom Reader Book. Buy if you only want a good laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, November 2, 2009
This review is from: How Animals Have Sex (Hardcover)
I had this book in paperback. It was borrowed and not returned. It is so good that I am reordering it in hardcopy. Pictures can be graphic but the information is amazing and the authors humor is fanastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great facts and lots of fun, March 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How Animals Have Sex: A Guide to the Reproductive Habits of Creatures Great and Small (Paperback)
If you're looking for a highly detailed scientific treatise on animal mating habits, don't buy this book. On the other hand, if you want a book with each two pages devoted to a great photo, some fascinating "factoids" about the mating habits of specific and carefully selected animals, laced with wonderfully witty and humorous comments, this is the book for you. I immediately passed it around to many friends, so it has gotten pretty worn already and I'm going to order another. Everybody loved it.
