How to automate review,
By Jim Williams (Santa Barbara, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Automate Both New & Existing Homes (Paperback)
I found this book very helpful because it shows so many projects and system features that I can incorporate into my home automation system. I never realized how many convenient features that are made possible with the use of this book. It is also easy to do because the pictures show and the text explains exactly how the feature works, how to install the components and what parts by model number are required. I have purchased other books on this subject that were not useful to me but this one is. Thank you

Although it does not say on the description page,
when I recieved the book I could immediately tell that it was similar to an older version (which I also had) The old book is called "Automated Home Control" , "Design and Installation & Programming Manual. X-10 and Hardwired I/O Based Systems" 2nd edition by Silent Servant Home Control Inc. 1998 The book really covers the X10 controllers Stargate and CommStar, together with other X10 stuff from Leviton, et, all. It shows many wiring diagrams, but not programming. It has good ideas illustrated within it, but I do not find it worth the cost. I would say only for the X10 fan. Others should stay away. After reading a couple of books on the topic of home automation; I find this one to be the most detailed and comprehensive as well as easiest to follow, especially because of the many helpful pictures and diagrams. It has absolutely made me a home automation enthusiast. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in home automation.

Poor guide for the title subject,

If you are looking for a step by step guide to automate anything in your home this book is not going to help you. It has very simple rough diagrams using 2 systems and is more of an idea book on what you can automate than it is a book on how you can do it.

A good reference for starting but has few details of the current technologies. The explanation is good.
For starting it os not sufficient.

Many Applications,
By John Helander "JH" (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Automate Both New & Existing Homes (Paperback)
I liked this book because it showed me all the possible applications for home automation. I have not found another book that showed me so many ways to make my home more convenient and secure. Lots of drawings and it also told me what components to use for each application. I found the components to be less cost than I originally thought. The author did a good job.
