Written by a practicing attorney, writer, and public speaker, How You Can Avoid Legal Land Mines: A Layman's Guide To The Law is a no-nonsense, layman's-language summary of common legal myths and sound basic advice for preventing and dealing with a wide range of legal problems. Each one or two-page reflection on a common legal issue that many ordinary people are unaware of is followed up with a summary for quick reference and long-lasting impression, such as "As soon as you hit the choppy seas of marital discord, you should close, suspend, or deplete your joint accounts" and "Never agree to give a statement without first consulting an attorney." True anecdotes include the story of the businessman who tried to end a contract with a uniform provider; in order to be nice to the provider's representative, the businessman wrote a letter saying he was satisfied with the service but wished to discontinue it - only to learn later that he could not legally cancel the contract unless he was unsatisfied with the service, and that he had compromised himself with his own letter.
