Book Description

In his revolutionary new book, Dave Allred (TheRealBarman.com) uses his fifteen years of professional bartending and bar management experience to provide you with a powerful step by step, detail by detail blueprint for securing a high-paying bartending job with little or no experience.
Most bartending books on the market are simply a list of drink recipes and bar tools with bland advice on what skills it takes to become a bartender. Dave's book is inspiring, dynamic and offers powerful techniques for aspiring bartenders, including:

*How to set specific goals that get you a job as quickly as possible
*How to choose the best bars to work at based on your personality
*How to get the owner, manager and bar staff to love you before you ever interview
*How to create a cover letter and resume that outperforms 95% of the competition
*The exact questions you will be asked in the interview - it's like getting a copy of the test before the exam
*Questions YOU should ask in the interview that will blow the manager away
*The myths of bartending - It's not as hard as they'd like you to believe
*Interview Do's and Don'ts - 20 tips that will propel you ahead of the competition
*Comprehensive guide to liquor, beer, wine, glassware, bar tools, techniques and terminology
*100 Most Popular Cocktails Made Today
*The 20 Shots you MUST know to bartend
*All the skills you'll ever need to become an expert bartender
*Why bartending schools are for suckers!
*Guest service and what real life is like behind the bar

Entertaining, humorous and informative, How to Be a Bartender is a must have for anyone wanting to know what it takes to break into the bar business. Everything in this book identifies exactly what bar managers and owners are looking for that will put you miles ahead of the competition. This is the first time a book has appeared on the market that actually helps people with no experience find a bartending job. If you want a chance at landing a high-paying job as a bartender, read Dave's book, eliminate the mistakes that prevent people from being hired, and wow bar managers in the interview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes All the Guesswork Out May 30, 2012
They say it takes 10,000 hours at anything to truly become a master, and it's clear Dave has put his time in and knows his craft like a Sensei. Now he's handing all that knowhow and wisdom to his readers like a passcode, offering a way to cut to the front of the hiring line. I bartended a little in the past, and if I'd had Dave's book at my fingertips, I'd never have left for the years of money-sucking university training and the shrinking "professional" sector, and would be hell of a lot better off financially. Glad to know it's not too late. Bartending is the most recession-proof job out there. The tougher things get, the more people drink. The job pays decently, will never be outsourced, and doesn't require a backbreaking college loan to become eligible. That said, Dave's book really should be priced more like a textbook--if textbooks were ever this droll, clever and eminently useful.

This book is a gift to anyone with a little initiative and sense of adventure, and who knows where the job security is. It's also a gift to anyone who enjoys fine writing like a crisp, dry Cabernet. I'd say "They should have sent a poet" but apparently they did. It seems bartending leaves time for other talents as well.

This book is amazing. With this book and a little practice at home you won't need to spend hundreds on a bartending class. Very detailed and helpful. I got an interview a few days after I finished the book, didn't get the job but the advice Dave gives you works. I recommend it anyone looking to become a bartender.

I picked up this book from a recommendation from a family member. I've been interested in bartending for a while now, and this book is right up my alley. If you aren't sure if you want to be a bartender, pick up the book. It's definitely worth the money. Dave has written this book in a realistic down to earth way that makes it that much more real. The book cuts out the b.s and gets down to business with transforming your life. So get off your butt and just buy the book! You won't regret it.

Thanks again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading if you're considering April 15, 2013

becoming a bartender, or even if you liked reading Anthony Bourdain's stuff, which I did, and just want to know a little more about the back story.

So, the five stars is based upon the quality of the information and the easy reading format, if the author wants to write a book like Kitchen Confidential; Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, I think he could and it would be a good read too. I read this book for both reasons, although I am sort of considering a career move and that was the catalyst for looking at this book, I also enjoy reading "insider" stuff about different careers and jobs and such, so I'm hoping there is a future edition.

I'd originally decided to pass on reading this because the other reviews were from people that don't review much, and I was suspicious about that, however the author wrote me a note that my suspicions were unfounded and he graciously offered me a free copy, as you can see, by the "Amazon verified purchase" I refused his offer and bought it on my own, so this review is the real deal, I paid for it and I'm happy I did.

I absolutely recommend the book to anyone that is considering a bar tending career, to not spend a few bucks and a few hours of reading would be really dumb, so if you're thinking about it, go ahead and read it, it's worth the knowledge and advice for sure.

I live in Japan, not too far from Tokyo. I got a job within 20 days following Dave's tips. I do speak some Japanese, but it's far from perfect.

Me, a gaijin. In Japan. Within 20 days. If that ain't proof for you, I don't know what is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning everything about the bar world February 21, 2013

I have been wanting to go back into the bar world for awhile and reading this book has really helped out in so many ways and I am not even done reading it yet! Dave is a great storyteller with a lot of positive insights to help make you feel confident about getting the job of your dreams. Understanding the process from picking out the places you want to work at, finding people to talk to and getting them to talk to you, resume help and overall training on how to make drinks and bar essentials is just the tip of the iceberg with this book. My only wish is that I can get a copy in hardback! I hope to make a huge career change back to bartending and make Dave proud. Great book for anyone that used to be in the industry, is currently in the industry or even for someone that wants a good read and insight into the bar world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written February 17, 2013

Well written, easy to read, and I did land a bartending job, however it seems more written for a newbie out of college or high school, than someone with 20 years of work experience trying to land a side job. A lot of the people skills, etc I already knew, but that may just be me. I definitely recommend it more than any other book of it's type out there! Thanks Dave!
