4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good! September 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I don't know why I downloaded this - perhaps simply because it was free and the title caught my eye :o)

This book is very different from all the others in its style... and I found it a great read. Mike's honesty, and the way he writes as he speaks (I imagine) made this a book I really enjoyed.

Much more than just a list of what he got, the humour surrounding his efforts, and the help he offers wannabe blaggers is well worth it. You find yourself rooting for him... in between running to the PC to see these companies to which he posts links.

If you only ever read one blagger book in your life - this should be it. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars A diary including reviews May 17, 2012
By Bob
Format:Kindle Edition
I found the previous book "Free Stuff every day" Free Stuff Everyday: How Customers And Companies Can Unlock The Power of Freebies very useful as it gives loads of hints on how to get free stuff although I confess I did not have the nerve to try all of the techniques. However this book is very different in that the author has set himself the task of "blagging" 100 items for free unfortunately I thought that the diary type approach which did little more than include reviews of the items that he had managed to blagg, there were humorous moments but on large I found it boring and repetitious. I should not complain however as I received it free from the author to review.

3.0 out of 5 stars A personal account of a personal challenge May 17, 2012
By Peter
Format:Kindle Edition
Mike Essex writes a review blog that gives exposure to products and services, and in return, he asks asks the manufacturer to provide the items to him for free. How to Be a Blagger is a personal account of his attempt to be given 100 free items in a year, interspersed with relevant product reviews from his website. True to the Mike Essex marketing model, I was sent a review copy of this book at no cost.

Essex is disarmingly honest, and is quite frank about the problems he's had to overcome when asking for "something for free". His first blag was a free packet of McVities Hobnob Biscuits (well, to be fair, it was actually two packets) but the enthusiastic and mildly self-deprecating way Essex speaks of such tiny victories is actually quite entertaining. He has gone to some effort to give each of his reviews a unique angle; the Veet for Men Hair Removal Gel Creme 200ml review is a highlight (incidentally, the customer reviews of this product on the Amazon UK website are rather eccentric and are worth checking out). There's also a short section in the book where Essex gives his thoughts on starting out for would-be blaggers.

If you are curious about such things, or if you fancy finding out how Essex managed to acquire his pile of "free" items, it's worth reading. I found it strangely compulsive as a bit of light relief, largely because I'm interested in reviewing and reviews.

this was a silly book about how one person got free stuff. it took way too much work and not enough rewards for me. but it made me laugh a few times.
