I purchased two of these books for different children, and each is using the book in their own ways to learn about the world in which they live. Not a day goes by that one or the other doesn't discover, on their own, something else amazing about the environment they occupy. Want to get your child away from the video games? Off the cell phone for hours at a time? Offer this book as a gift, and watch their knowledge grow page by page as they themselves become to authors of their own experiences in learning. These books are truly amazing, and do not have to be limited to children. Many bored adults who could use an inspiration that life doesn't have to be mundane can benefit from the use of this book. I recommend it for all ages and a book for each family member. If each one has his own book, discussions can begin at any time with everyone participating on different discoveries while the book has given each person the same suggestion for an 'assignment.' Fun and informative gift for anyone for any occasion.

This book is fun and it will push you to do things that you have not considered doing, like collecting all sorts of objects and writing about them. I loved it!

This work has been used in one of my university courses for industrial design. It has a great way of allowing freedom while doing real anthropological research. The book is full of 'explorations' - 50 in total - that motivate you to get up and explore the world right at your feet - you don't have to go far or even anywhere at all to learn something new.

The layout is easy to follow, and has lots and lots of room for your own personal notes and reflections - which is what the book is all about - along with some inspirational quotes and facts to get you out and off the couch.

Love Keri Smiths work - definitely recommend for designers or those who are simply curious about how people relate to their surroundings.

This is a great book for homeschoolers, all teachers, even adult writers. It's presentation is unconventional: a smorgasbord of pictures, words, and very creative graphic organizers. As students, teachers, and writers we all are prone to just get 'stuck' sometimes. This book can give a jump start to looking at things differently. Things could be anything from a chair, to cracks in the sidewalk. The book gets one to start thinking outside the box, so to speak. It is not a book meant to be read cover to cover from start to finish. It works best by randomly opening to a page an seeing how it fits with what you are trying to do. Seeing how it helps to propel you forward in your current quest.

The head of the Maths and Science School here in my home state of South Australia recommended this book to be bought by all science teachers as a way to experience and remember what environments offer, and how ideas are generated from experiencing things firsthand. Its a manual about getting out and looking, sensing, feeling and interacting with your "familiar" environment. It may seem whimsical and frivolous at first, but its actually what we all need to do more of these days- get away from the computer and go look!!
Yoko Ono's "Grapefruit", but with more suggestions of things to do is how I thought of it on first read!

I teach middle schoolers how to strengthen their writing skills. I ran across this book while searching Amazon for some journal ideas for my own children at Christmas time. I bought the book for prompt ideas for my class. It has been amazing. So much so that I'm facilitating a class for teachers wanting to learn more about building their students' writing skills and our LA department is going to buy a copy of the book to give to each of the workshop participants. Yay! I can't wait to show more teachers how this book can be used to begin some fantastic activities in the classroom.

Gave this to a daughter and her family, but I really wanted to keep it for myself to use when the grandkids come. Might just have to get another. Full of interesting things to do without having to invest in equipment or supplies.

Very cute ideas in this book. As an artist I usually get something out of it whenever I randomly open it. Also, I leave it out and about so that people can play with it when they come over. Everyone likes it :)

This book was FABULOUS! It was completely different to what I expected as it expects 'user input' and is not a book to be read from one cover to the other.

My recommendation - get it! You'll love it!

8 year old birthday gift, combined with a measuring tape, magnifying glass, case to collect samples, journal and a backpack -- and there is the start to a wonderful adventure.
