2.0 out of 5 stars Huge fan....of ANY other dada album
Huge dada fan here. Have seen them every single time they've made it Mpls. Given that, this album is just weak, and not nearly to the level of the dada pre-hiatus era.

My main complaint is the poor sound/mixing/mastering/whatever. Not sure if this comes from self-production or what (they wouldn't be the first band to suffer after doing it themselves--see...

Dada showed up near my house for a concert in a smallish venue. A friend said they were good so I went. I was blown away. I didn't know any of their songs before that concert, but it was still great. Since that time I have become another dada fanatic. They are the greatest unknown band. It's too bad Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Rap took over the alternative scene, seriously. Give me back dada, Jellyfish, and Matthew Sweet any day. They also remind me of Oasis, but infinitely better. Dada always has great guitar work and rocking songs, and they also have ballads that will either totally blow you away or make you cringe, they are just so good that they belong back in the days of Beatles, before the world was so cynical. Most people aren't embarrassed to sing Temptations "My Girl" or Beatles "Something," but for some reason they don't want to go there with a "new" song. Dada can take you there. This album includes several of the best ballads written in the past decade. It also had edgy guitar work that is not for the weak and simple minded folk. They are behind the times and ahead of their time and that's part of their appeal, just damn good music. I would classify several songs from this album as 60s psychedelic. Like some of the other reviews have mentioned, you need to listen to a dada album a couple of times before it hits you. They have the best and most interesting harmonies out there today, excellent instrumentation, and unique lyrics (particularly Puzzle). This is a solid dada album. A side note: Puzzle has some of the most interesting songs I have ever heard, and if you haven't heard dada before, start there. The lyrics in this album are not as clever as El Subliminoso and not as perfectly produced at their 4th album titled dada, but this album can stand on it's own. I listen to this album more than 95% of the other albums in my huge collection. These aren't songs that you get tired of; they are songs that get better with each play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not their best album, but still great, March 26, 2005
This review is from: How to Be Found (Audio CD)
I've seen Dada twice, once back in 94, after the release of American Highway Flower, and again about a year ago. There is no way you can possibly conceive how incredible a guitarist Mike Gurley is simply by listening to their recordings alone. He is phenomenal, and it is beyond me why they have gotten no air play whatsoever, besides Dizz Knee Land and Dim. Gurley is one of the most interesting musicians to listen to--his guitar work will captivate you, and you will be astounded by the sounds he can make with his instrument. If I had to say, "gee, I sure wish I could play guitar like him", I would say it about Gurley, he is by far one of the best. As far as How To Be Found goes, it's very good. Lots of nice rockers, "No one Like You" is an incredible song and "Love is a Weird Thing" is also very good, two of my favorite songs by Dada, and the two standout tracks on this CD. I think this follows nicely along the path Dada has started on since they began recording, and though it's not their best album, take into consideration what they've done before--how could you top albums like American Highway Flower or El Subliminoso?? Those are landmarks in modern rock. All in all, fans should not be disappointed by this album, I wasn't whatsoever. If ever Dada comes to your town, you better go see them--they put on one of the most incredible shows, and I guarantee if you like Dada now, you'll like them ten times more after you experience them live!!!

This new album proves it, Dada is back in their full glory. As if they never went away, the band picks up right where they left off with How To Be Found. This is classic Dada that will excite old fans and has the power to draw new ones. I picked up this disc after seeing them on their 2004 tour. I have to admit, after such a long hiatus from the band, I was nervous that their new tracks would be altogether different than 90's run of albums. No way! Dada has not missed a beat. Not to say that the trio hasn't ventured into some uncharted territory since their last disc. There are definitely some new sounds, especially in track 2, "It's All Mine" where a retro Beatle-esque sound is prevalent.

How To Be Found is sure to become part of my top 10 CD list. After owning this disc for only 2 days (which I have signed by all three members) I am already falling in love with this entire compilation.

One of the greatest attributes of this group is the inspiration that is deeply rooted in their songwriting and performances both in the studio and on stage. Michael Gurley (vocals and guitar) geniously paints pictures with his style of guitar that has a blues feel and rock drive.

Pick up this album, it is a lot of fun and gives you something different to listen to rather than the continuous repetition of the same 24 songs on your favorite radio station. You will not be disappointed.

If you are going to buy this CD, and you have never heard of Dada before, purchase the Puzzle CD as well which is their absolute best single piece of work.

Becoming a fan of a band has never been easier. I am personally glad to see them return with such a strong offering.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's Left To Be Said?, April 29, 2005
This review is from: How to Be Found (Audio CD)
After reading all of the superlative reviews of DADA'S latest release: "How To Be Found"; I find it incredible that these guys are still so relevent musically.I've found myself listening to this CD over, and over and each time finding something in the songs that I had'nt heard before. The last song "Love Is A Weird Thing" is by itself, an example of why I never get tired of listening to these guys. It starts out slow, and then builds to an emotionally charged dynamic ending. All the other reviews are right: DADA are back, and better than ever!

Forget 'dizz-knee-land' and welcome back Dada! After a somewhat forced hiatus due to record labels crumbling around them, Dada has reunited and offers their 5th opus of sing-a-long, story-telling and melodic tracks. A music-loving fan should not know this band from one song alone that dates back to 1992. It's been over 10 years since, and How To Be Found proves how talented and over-looked this trio is. Every song on this CD has a unique way of hooking the listener into singing along or visualizing a story from the lyrics. Add How To Be Found to your collection and be sure to also catch Dada this year on tour...their live show is infectious.

5.0 out of 5 stars dada defies description, March 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Be Found (Audio CD)
I think one of the reasons this group is often overlooked is that they don't fit neatly into any existing genre. Sometimes alternative, sometimes pop, sometimes even folkish or jazzish, but always great, dada delivers big time on How To Be Found. Fans like me have waited six long years for this disc, and it is everything we have hoped for. But its appeal should be much broader than just dada's existing fan base. The melodies, songwriting, harmonies, and instrumental work on this disc are peerless. Dada runs the gamut from hard rockers like "Crumble" to jazzy instrospective numbers like "Reason". The two real standouts for me on this disc were "How To Be Found" and "Next Train Out of My Mind", which both pay homage to great 60s and 70s bands like the Beatles, Zombies and Doors but with a totally fresh sound. Listen to this disc. It is better than anything else you have heard in years.

If you are already a dada fan, buying this CD is a no brainer. If you are not familiar with the band, buy this CD and I guarantee you will be a fan. Great harmonies, rocking sound, and three of the tightest players out there. dada is one of the best kept secrets in the music business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Their most consistent effort yet?, March 3, 2004

Dada has returned, and does not disappoint. This album is wonderfully arranged and shows the band has not sold out to finance their continued existence. A six-year hiatus has allowed the band to relax and return with their signature harmonies, songwriting and trademark 3-man sound.

I bought this album 10 days ago at a life show in Tacoma, and was hooked on my third listen. I needed a couple of days to allow my adrenaline to return to normal after the live show to appreciate the songs apart from the performance.

The album starts out strong with up-tempo tunes such as the addicting "It's All Mine" and "Crumble," and finishes with more haunting and complex songs such as ""My Life Could Be Different" and "Love is a Wierd Thing." All songs are strong, and I don't find myself skipping through any (with the possible exception of "I Wish You Were Here Now"). Though there are some stronger songs on Puzzle and American Highway Flower, this album is more enjoyable as a whole.

This review is from: How to Be Found (Audio CD)
There was another review here that was quite negative, but it was because she thought she was buying something completely different! Dada has been around since the early nineties, and after a hiatus of sorts, they reformed to produce "How To Be Found". I'll echo what many other reviews and comments here and across the Internet say: dada is the most under-rated power trio of the nineties and now. These guys are musician's musicians! And HTBF is as good as their first album, "Puzzle". If you're new to dada, pick either or both of these albums, then dive into their other releases for more goodness. And if you EVER get a chance to see them live, you MUST go! You will not be disappointed ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Music from Real Musicians, April 30, 2004
This review is from: How to Be Found (Audio CD)
This cd is one of the best things I've heard in the last year, and you might be missing out on it. Just listen to How to Be Found, Crumble or Any Day The Wind Blows. This is a talented band with real musicianship. They are rock and jazz influenced and play with a passion that is rarely matched. Their other albums are all worth finding if you can. And if these guys come to your town, you won't be disappointed in the show.
