Lesbianism for Dummies,
By
This review is from: How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide (Paperback)
This is a book I wish I'd had many years ago, my transition into being "out" would have been much easier, less confusing. I would have spent less time feeling as though I was fumbling around in the dark. So many things I needed to know, and many things that it never occurred to me to ask (but I TRULY needed to know), are included in this book. It is so easy to read, fun actually. The tone is kind, as though you were in the room with dear friends, or the big sister we all dream of having!
Please know that this book is NOT just for young women. I spent 20 years being a wife, trying to be who I had been told I was, so it was in middle age that I decided to live an authentic life and this book made that transition less painful, more joyful. Thank you Tracey & Katherine!

Real Help Is Just A Few Clicks Away,

When I was finally ready to come out as a lesbian woman, I scoured the internet for resources to assist me with this difficult step. I couldn't believe my good fortune when I discovered "How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide". There, in one book, was everything I needed - from information on coming out to family, friends and coworkers to symbols, role models, politics and living as a lesbian in the world today. There are also additional resources cited: books, organizations, and support groups to aid in the transition for you and your family, or for issues like abuse and hate crimes. The chapters on communication, practicing safer sex, and therapy would be helpful to any person or couple. The sex tips guide was informative and enlightening without being crude or vulgar.
For me, preparation is the key; reading through "How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide" helped me face and conquer the fear of rejection and loss that had troubled me for so many years. I was empowered with a new-found confidence and understanding of what it means to be a lesbian and that it was not something to be ashamed of, but to rejoice in. My coming out became a joyful experience for me thanks to my wonderful friends and family and my new friends at Amazing Dreams.

"If you know a young gal who has decided to follow in Sappho's footsteps, hand her this book. It is an excellent resource and is sure to answer any question a newly realized lesbian might have. Written in a systematic, this-is-the-way-I-do-it format, this humorous 'encyclopedia' of lesbian lore is just a good read even for those in long-term relationships. Discussing topics such as gay symbols, gay rights, STDs, famous and not-so-famous lesbians, and movies that shouldn't be missed, this guide will help young women feel good about themselves and proud of who they are. It provides a solid framework on which to build self-esteem . . ."

"How to Be a Happy Lesbian" does two things better than other books I have read concerning lesbian sex. The first is an excellent chapter talking about safer sex, complete with a long list and descriptions of STD's and other issues affecting lesbians. This is a more complete list than I have seen in my other purchases. The second item I found very helpful was a chapter on therapy and therapists. I had no prior experience with therapy and needed background on the process. The information contained here gave me starting points for more research, and I have since found a therapist who fits my needs as a latebloomer very well.

By
This review is from: How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide (Paperback)
Right after I came out, I read how to be a happy lez. I walked into a gay book store in down town Long beach called Equal Writes.........I told the man standing at the counter that I had just come out and needed to learn how to be a lesbian.........he reccommended this book and a few others.......
Shortly after reading this book I had my first date with a woman @hamberger mary's in Newport Beach.......On our date I kept prattling away about how wonderful this book is..........she said "god Mel......sounds like your trying to be "the perfect lesbian", where are your rainbow pom pom's?" I think when anyone is trying to adapt to a new culture and traffic within a new people group that they need a guide to teach them proper protocal......... I must admit I still have many questions.......I probably will until the day I die.......... What this book helped me to learn was that it's ok to be a gay woman.........its ok to love other women........I am not a pervert that should be locked in a shack in the desert and left to die........ My coming out process started years ago when I became a "fruit fly" (women who is friends with gay men but does not want to sleep with them) and started frequenting gay clubs.........when I came out to my male friends........they helped me as much as they could..........but one thing I have learned from reading this book........gay men and lesbian women come from two different countries.........We have different clubs......customs..........culture.........and languages..........a gay man can not be a lesbians tour guide through lesbian territory...........so whats a girl to do who does not know anyone it town??? How is she to meet people and find the lesbian watering hole????? If you think you might be a lesbian........if you are a gay man and think your fag hag or fruit fly might be a lesbian..........BUY A COPY OF THIS BOOK NOW!!!!!!!!!! Count all of the quarters trapped between your sofa cushon and buy this book!!!!!!!! Buy a pizza or chineese take out next week...........but BUY THE BOOK TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This truly is a guide that will answer many of the questions you may have.........and atleast it will give you a good vocabulary and knowledge base to begin further research...........

I bought this book for a friend who was coming out of the closet,

I have a female friend who was coming out of the closet, and I bought her this book as a supportive gift. She said there was so much information in it, it is like a lesbian encyclopedia, and that it is really entertaining to read! She learned all kinds of things about lesbian symbols and what they mean, and how to handle coming out to friends and family. She said there is a chapter on famous lesbian and gay people throughout history that she never knew about. She went to the publisher's web site, and they even have an online support group for women coming out worldwide! My friend joined this group, and she said she no longer feels alone in the world. I am so glad I got this book for her! I've never seen her this happy.

Coming out is hard at any age, but 61? That was me. and, living in small town Arkansas, raised Southern Baptist, made it even harder. This book helped me realize I could finally live my life for myself, not everyone else. It gave me the courage to be me. For any woman out there who is wondering, questioning, longing, get this book and see that you CAN be happy, CAN be yourself, CAN be OUT.

I have seen the light,
By Marcia (British Columbia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Be A Happy Lesbian: A Coming Out Guide (Paperback)
For so long I put everything into my work and nothing into me. A few years ago I made the decision to focus on ME and not everyone else. In doing so I discovered a few things about myself that I had pushed to the back of the inner recesses of my mind....mainly that I'm attracted to women. No wonder I never had any chemistry with men. I was looking for the right thing with the wrong gender. But with little support, there was nothing I could do with these feelings...I was uncomfortable with myself. But then I discovered the website and this book....it covers every topic I had questions about and then some. The amount of useful information is astounding. Why on earth did I not discover this book sooner? It would have saved me a couple of extra "floating" years....time that would have been better spent working on being true to myself and who I am - exactly what this book was intended to do, I'm sure. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

In my collection of sex books, there are very few for Lesbians so this is a welcome addition: "HOW TO BE A HAPPY LESBIAN - A COMING OUT GUIDE". Some of the chapters include 'How do I know if I'm gay?' and 'How do I recognize if someone is lesbian?' There is information on lesbian lovemaking and safer sex, and the tone is gentle and humorous. For all those women who have ever wondered, I recommend this book.
