Tom Silver This book is one of the best books ever written on Hypnotism. I have always wanted to write a book on the age old science of hypnotism that would help people to understand this important science and art that has been practiced for thousands of years in different cultures all over the world. I wanted this book to also give the reader the chance to actually learn how to hypnotize people and how to use hypnotism for healing purposes as well as for entertainment. I co-wrote this book with Ormond McGill who is considered the "Dean of American Hypnotists". Ormond McGill has performed and practiced stage hypnotism and hypnotherapy all over the world for over 50 Years. Ormond McGill is one of the most recognized living authorities on the field of hypnotism. Ormond McGill himself says that he is very proud of this book and that "The How-To Book of Hypnotism is one of the very best books he has ever written on hypnosis. Ormond McGill has written over 20 different published books on the field of hypnotism.

I am also very proud to have worked with Ormond McGill and to have co-written this easy to read and fun to read book on hypnotism. Our first printing of this book was in January 2000. Now Revised in 2001.

I am very proud to say without a doubt that I have also taken the science hypnotism to the "Outer Limits" by my own accomplishments in the field of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

I have had my own one hour C.B.S. National Television Special called "Hypnotized", where I hypnotized real people in real places and had them perform all kinds of fun and amazing things while under hypnosis.

I set a "World's Record" in Taiwan Republic of China, by hypnotizing over 3,800 people all at the same time through an interpreter in Mandarin Chinese with the help of Dr. Huang my interpretor.

I introduced the Taiwan Department of Defense to the use of "Forensic Hypnosis" and Hypnotherapy and received a "Gold Plate" of Honor from the Taiwan Minister of Defense in July 1997.

I have also performed hypnosis demonstrations on a number of different national television shows and radio shows all over the world during the past 15 years.

I have helped thousands of people change their lives by utilizing hypnotherapy and self hypnosis.

Ormond McGill and myself are very proud of this wonderful and easy to read book and manual on Hypnosis which we call "The How-To Book of Hypnotism".

READ THIS BOOK AND YOU CAN LEARN: * Some History of Hypnotism * How to rid yourself of unwanted habits * Hypnosis Stage Show Demonstrations * Suggestions for the Hypnotherapist * The ancient art of Magnetic Healing * How to develop your Personal Magnetism * Self Hypnosis * Interlingual Hypnotic Trance Induction* * How to control your bio computers * and more!

This book is a must for any Hypnotist or Hypnotherapist’s library. It is also highly recommended to anybody to has an interest in the science and art of Hypnotism. Everyone can learn from this book. This book is intended for mature readers, 18 years of age or order.

This book is a "How-To" instructional manual of how to hypnotize, how to demonstrate hypnotic phenomena and how to use hypnosis for many useful purposes. Mankind's knowledge advances by spreading knowledge. No study is more important than the advancement of the human mind, our greatest gift.

This volume is a "How-To" text of hypnotism. It presents step-by step instructions so that you will learn with ease and enjoyment. "For we learn best that which we enjoy learning." Tom Silver & Ormond McGill / Author

3.0 out of 5 stars Well written but of dubious scientific validity, February 9, 2002
This review is from: The How-To Book Of Hypnotism (Paperback)
This is an enjoyable book, mainly about stage hypnotism. It is short on science and maintains the old idea that animal magnetism is at the basis of hypnosis. This theory was scienfically discreditated at the time of Anton Mesmer and Ben Franklin. The practical points are well done, but the theory is consists of New Age claptrap and pseudoscience. If you want to learn to be a stage hypnotist and don't care about understanding the science behind hypnosis, this is a good book to buy (though it is rather expensive for such a brief volume). The practical "how-to" advice is sound. If you are more skeptical and value the findings of modern science, you will be disappointed since this book promulgates unscientific misinformation and long-discredited theories about hypnotic influence.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy if your aim is to have fun. Pass if looking for serious., April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The How-To Book Of Hypnotism (Paperback)
Given that you can read "How To"'s thin, LARGE print 166 pages in one sitting, that alone should illustrate how this book only touches the surface of a "DEEP DEEP" subject (pun intended). Though I thought the book a good intro, it still felt like a too brief overview rather than a manual. Hardly does it cover the subject "completely" as many reviewers claim, and is hardly a "must read" as stated by another. It is aimed more at novice and stage material. Even the one paragraph "mastering the smoking habit" is nothing more than the old stage line about the cigarette tasting stale and terrible. Though most hypnotists agree this never works, as the smoker uses rationale to remove the suggestion, McGill and Silver claim "such treatments are sufficient to cure the worst cigarette smoker." Wow. With millions of dollars being spent by consumers trying to break the habit, these guys conquer it in one paragraph. Nonsense.

The authors also make too many other elobarate and ridiculous claims as if they were fact and not opinion. For example, page 87 you are told you can put a subject in a trance easily for over 48 hours, suspending all bodily functions, as easily as you can suggest their little stage jokes. Let's not forget the pages dedicated to ESP, telepathy, and magnetic healing through hypnosis. Way too much fantasy there.

However, all that aside, if you are looking for a quick read and your main interest is to have some fun at parties, than this book is for you. You probably don't care about all the scientific stuff anyway, so why bother. This will teach you a few inductions and some fun stage tricks and techniques. Quick and easy, just don't expect miracles and expect to pass on a lot of stuff as pure hocus pocus.

BUT, if you want a more detailed and scientific look, along with various induction techniques for professional use, this book is NOT the book you want. It will not address true Hypnotherapy, only parlor tricks. It will not help you with problem inductions, problems with trance states, proper wording of suggestions and other professional needs. Try HYPNOTHERAPY by Dave Elman, or TRANCEWORK by Michael Yapko. Fortunately I ordered those as well when I got this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some basic overview of hypnosis, December 18, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The How-To Book Of Hypnotism (Paperback)
This book provides a very brief overview of different methods and applicatications from stage hypnosis, mesmerism, few methods of inducing self-hypnosis, suggestions for using hypnosis for healing certain ailments.

Most suggestions (pattern scripts) in this book are based on the fomula "when I count to three, you'll do so and so", or "when you awaken, you'll do so and so" and that's it.

Part of this book deals with Mesmeric (magnetic) healing, a topic that is not that often mentioned in modern hypnosis books (except books by Ormond McGill), but is more thoroughly covered in books dealing with energy healing.

If you already have Ormond McGill's Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnosis, then you'll find that a good deal of material mentioned in this book has already been covered there.

As for learning how to induce hypnosis over the phone or through the mail, get books that deal with hypnotic language patterns, sleight of mouth, and learn some indirect suggestions - Ericksonian hypnosis.
