How to Build a Career in the New Economy: A Guide for Minorities & Women [Paperback]

Anthony Stith (Author)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

April 1999
Always challenging and controversial, author Anthony Stith the author of "Breaking The Glass Ceiling" describes his take on today s complex job market including the barriers and opportunities for women and minorities. His basic premise is that the gains in job opportunities produced by the 1960s civil rights and women s liberation movements since the middle 1980s have been dramatically reduced. The "new economy" has had dramatic effects on employment statistics for women and minorities and has resulted in changes to benefits and compensation that reduce the average workers security.

However, the new economy has entrepreneurial opportunities and new career paths that are not as susceptible to ingrained discrimination and sexist attitudes. This book explores these areas in detail. Specifically:

* Reinventing Your Current Career
* Identifying and Establishing a New Career
* Rebounding After Termination
* Essential Considerations Before You Change Employers or Careers

In addition, Stith describes the nuts and bolts issues such as:

* Preparing for the Interview
* Resumes that Produce Results
* Generating Interviews
* The Art of the Interview.

In every case, the tips, suggestions and advice are targeted to an audience of women and minorities, focusing on special circumstances that women and minorities face in the job market.

This book is also ideal for corporations and businesses who are committed to making diversity in the workplace a reality and not just a chic term.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Stith points out that the "new economy," characterized by technological change and globalization, has many advantages for women and minorities because the pace of development is so rapid that there is no time for prejudice to develop. Nevertheless, it also holds the risks that apply to everyone, namely, the elimination of jobs and the requirement of new skills. Although the author contends that racism and sexism still exist beneath the surface, he offers a road map for building a career through careful planning, constant learning, and perseverance. His five principles for a successful career are knowing the difference between a career and a job; actively planning a career, including long-and short-term goals; never allowing money to be the determining factor in a career choice; seeking, recognizing, and utilizing opportunities; and learning how to take risks. Although Stith's approach to career planning is not unique, it is directed toward minorities and women who may need specific encouragement for this important and long-term challenge. Mary Whaley
