THE Band of the 90's!, August 31, 1999

This review is from: How Can I Sleep (Audio CD)
Cordelia's Dad is a fascinating band out of Mass., that blends a heavy rock style, almost "grunge" feel, with traditional folk music. Thinking "outside of the box," they challenge the listener, the critic, and the suits in the music biz to do the same.
"How Can I Sleep" is an incredible effort by this trio, clean studio work with great instrumentation and arrangement. Just listen to their version of "Narragansett Bay," with a new verse written by the band. It was this song that really caught my attention to this band, the haunting tune and lyrics stay with the listener for days after hearing it.
Their arrangements of all the songs in this package are noteworthy, to say the least, but others that really stick out in this reviewer's mind are their versions of "Texas Rangers"(read the liner notes on this one!), "Delia," "Sweet William," and "Little Margaret."
The song "Bend to the East" evolved in the studio from the old fiddle tune, "Been to the East." This humorous tidbit is shared with the listener in the very informative liner notes.
Whether you are a listener of rock, grunge, folk, or whatever, this album is sure to delight you!
