Great music with a great message!!,
By Danielle (Northern NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Can We Be Silent (Audio CD)
I'm a HUGE fan of Another Journal Entry, so I definitely wanted to check out BarlowGirl's latest album. To be honest, when I listened to the preview samples, I wasn't sure if I would like the album. But, I decided to buy it anyway, and I'm SOOOOO glad I did. I love it! The lyrics are truly powerful and you can tell they've really poured out their hearts into this album, sharing their victories and struggles as followers of Christ. They are continuing to encourage other young believers to stand up and not be afraid to go against what the current culture says is 'right' but to firmly believe and trust in God through everything. An uplifting message to me, a 20-something young woman striving to do what is right in God's eyes :)
My absolute favorite songs are One More Round (which is the story of my life :P), I Believe in Love, Here's My Life, Million Voices (their self-proclaimed anthem), and I Don't Regret. I Don't Regret is an excellent answer to those that have criticized them for what they stand for. BarlowGirl answers back with powerful lyrics such as "They're telling me they're concerned for the way I am living, that I'll miss it all...I don't regret choosing You and I'm not ashamed...Why do we think if we trust God too much He'll fail us...". I'd highly suggest purchasing the How Can We Be Silent (premium edition) Which includes the CD plus a DVD containing footage of them in the studio and the photo shoot for the album. You'll also hear in their own words what inspired each song.

My Favorite Barlow Girl Project (Thus Far),
By Indiana Jeff Reynolds "Preacher Jeff" (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Can We Be Silent (Audio CD)
This is only the second Barlow Girl project I listened to -- I have yet to listen to their second effort.
I was surprised with the strings on the opening song -- and pleased. I enjoyed this one much more than the debut project. Most of the time, I avoid reading any of the other reviews before I post mine, but this time I looked at the trio of 2 star reviews and the one 3 star review. One pointed out the music style is different. I agree, but for me, this is a plus. One mentioned it was too slow and another that all sounded the same. They must have been listening to different projects. Another mentioned the lyrics were hard to understand. To some extent I agree, but I didn't find it harder than a lot of other projects by other artists. And there was a lot I did understand without consulting the lyrics. One person mentioned the cover art (on the one 4 star review I read). I found the first picture to make a statement, tying in the title to the concept of "One More Round". This is not the first time Christianity has been equated with a boxing match (e.g. "Contender" by Sweet Comfort Band, "No Way I'm Going Down" by White Cross, "I Come Out Fighting" by Greg Volx), and that is because of its applications. My favorite tracks? "Song For The Broken", "Here's My Life", "Million Voices", "Sweet Revenge", "One More Round", and "I Don't Regret".

I couldn't believe there were negative reviews for this album! Although when I first purchased it, It took me a while to warm up to it, by the time I was understanding what they were saying, It was my favorite CD! Every song is another worship experience and a different point made. I highly recommend this CD to new or semi new followers of Christ (between a new conversion to about 5 years into). Although I'm sure it would be enjoyed by others too.

I love how the PREMIUM EDITION includes a DVD of special footage of them in the studio, on their album photo shoot, and has them explain in their own words what each song is about and what inspired them to write it.

Barlowgirl's definitely don't keep silent!,

BarlowGirl's are one of those artists for me that I have followed since the beginning of their career. I love How Can We Be Silent because it is full of so much maturity and growth. BarlowGirl has finally established themselves as a top rock band in Christian music. How Can We Be Silent is full of amazing melodies and even stronger lyrics. Its a little cliche but I can't think of a better band for preteen and teen girls to be listening to. Though this album should easily appeal to any rock fan!

Barlow Girl, excellent artist. This is not their best album but it is quite excellent. Love their music. Great for teen girls in middle school or highschool.

Awesome CD. This is by far my favorite of all their CD's. These girls are very talented and I appreciate their efforts to share their lives through their music. Their testimony of how God works in their lives is what makes their music so real.

Different, but AMAZING.,
This review is from: How Can We Be Silent (Audio CD)
BarlowGirl has grown alot, spiritually, lyrically, and musically. True, this CD does have a very different feel from their previous two albums, this one is a bit less rock, and has more of the contemporary christian feel to it. But I can honestly say this is some of the best Christian music I have ever listened to.
The album is alot darker, lyrically and musically. It deals with the hardships of living the Christian life, with themes of hope, faith, and spiritual warfare. The lyrics are very deep and masterful, expressing the girls' faith through the years. 1. Song for the Broken (8/10) - The opener for this album starts out with a lot of strings, very catchy and guitar-driven, but doesnt stand out as much as the other songs. 2. I Believe in Love (10/10) - Fell in love with this on first listen. Powerful lyrics, deals with faith in midst of hardships. 3. Here's my Life (10/10) - The album's first single. This song takes awhile to get into, starts out very slow with synthesizers but ends strong with a lot of guitars. 4. Keep Quiet (8/10) - very bass-driven, but seems to lack something musically, deals with not being ashamed to speak about your faith. 5. Million Voices (10/10) - BarlowGirl's most outspoken song yet! This song is where the album's name "How Can We Be Silent" comes from. Sends an anthem to this generation. A ton of guitar, distortion, and drums. This is their rockiest song so far. 6. Sweet Revenge (9/10) - Also a very catchy song with strings. Deals with forgiveness. 7. One More Round (9/10) - BarlowGirl's first attempt at Jazz, one of the songs that make this CD so different. It took me a couple listens to like it. This song is where the CD cover's boxing ring comes from. No matter how many times we get knocked down, we have to get up and go for one more round. 8. Take My Chances (6/10) - Not my favorite. It comes from Romans 12:2, the verse BarlowGirl is most known for. The lyrics are pretty good, but musically it sounds too much like your typical rock band. 9. Guy Song (8/10) - This song is a challenge to the guys to stand up for their beliefs. Lyrically, good, musically, alright, but this song just somehow doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the album. 10. I Don't Regret (10/10) - The ballad of the CD. very melancholic. Lyrics are very deep, one of the songs that really show the maturity of the girls' song writing. This CD is one of the best, highly recommended whether you've been a long time fan or not. |
